[edit] Name o the project

The'r graet confusion ower this, wi me oniewey. A'v seen aa three variants -- Wikipedia, Wikipedie an Wikipaedia -- aa ower the shop. A think we need tae settle on wan name. A'm agin Wikipaedia mainly acause the RRSSC uises ae tae represent the soond in spaek or windae that can be /i/, /e/ or /ɪ/ dependin on whit airt ye'r frae. But A dinna think oniebodie's pronooncin it /wɪkɪpedia/ or /wɪkɪpɪdia/ -- A daursay that aabodie's sayin /wɪkɪpidia/, same as me (tho A cuid be wrang o coorse). (Wikipedie wad o coorse be /wɪkɪpidi/)

A'm no fasht whit ane o the ither name suggestions we wale. Mendor 18:24, 1 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Weel maist o the ither Romance an Germanic leids uise Wikipedia, sae aiblins it's best that we uise that tae sin ye dinna like Wikipaedia for spellin raisons. Wikipedie wuid be aaricht an aa. The ither leid that uises it is Czech -- nae that that maks onie odds. -- Derek Ross 18:51, 1 Jul 2005 (UTC)
A'd hiv thocht it wad hae been Wikipédie in Frainch, but it seems no. It wad help gin we haed onie idea o whit the Scots for encyclopedia wis, gin it wisna juist encyclopedia. A canna fin ocht in DSL. A think "Wikipedia" micht be the maist convenient, tho — Mendor 19:12, 1 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Thare uisst tae be the spellin Encyclopædia aften written Encyclopaedia acause fowk dinna hae thon chairacter on thair typewriters or computers. Tho A wad pronoonce it wi /i/ sae Wikipedia.

Bi the by, can ony o youse cliver chiels sort the IPA/Unicode templates. A haed a shottie at copyin thaim fae the English version but fund masel in a richt fankle. A jalouse that siclike is something we're gaun tae need. Mendor's contreebution abuin juist shaws wee kisties on ma computer - e'en in edit mode.

Jimmy 1st. Julie 2005

Aye, me an aa. I'll see whit I can dae. By the by, Jimmy, gin ye sign yer stuff bi pitting fower tildes aifter it like this: ~~~~, the Wikipedia saftware'll automatically sign and date it for ye. It's maks things a wee bit aesier. Cheers -- Derek Ross 19:37, 1 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for that wi the tildes. A aye wunnert hou fowk daes that.
A eikit a puckle airtins in the Help page. Is thare no a page anent hou tae edit pages? The bittie anent the tildes coud gang in thare an aw.

Jimmy 20:19, 1 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Tak a gander at Whit wey til edit a page. It's a muckle bruit but it haes aa that tilde stuff an aathing in't. Mendor haes translatit maist o it but there's aye a bit in English at the hindend, if ye're feelin eident. -- Derek Ross 20:34, 1 Jul 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Neologisms

Shuid we hae thaim?

Again, A hae conflictin views on this. The wis aareadies a wee collogue aboot it on meta — A'll hae tae see if A can fin it. Houaniver, A'm thinkin nou mair aboot a puckle o technical terms.

A'v been uisin a puckle neologisms that wisna ma ain — walin for "election" an unthirldom for "independence", baith aucht tae the SNP — but A'm a bit feart tae mak onie mair. For examplar, shuid we be crying "hydrogen" something like watterstuff (cp Ger Wasserstoff)? A dout the'r onie "tradeitional" Scots words for things like that, an it wad mak the meanin o the word mair transparent (for bairns in eddication, say) but it micht be seen as a bit... weel... silly*. But than, same wi unthirldom, an A'm no giein that ane up! :-)

Thochts? Mendor 14:13, 2 Jul 2005 (UTC)

* (tho A like Ander-Saxon, A ken that maist fowk wad juist see it as a silly joke. Mynd you, the'r plenty fowk see Scots as a bit silly an aa, sae mibbe it disna maitter.)

It does matter - if people think the Scots is silly you don't want to reinforce that impression (sorry, my own Scots is very limited - I can read this, but wouldn't like to attempt to write it!). Also, it has to be intelligible - if you make up a word, while it may explain the general meaning it will not necessarily make people understand that you mean a specific technical term. It's then no longer real Scots, but your own private made-up wikipaedia language. Anyway, that's my opinion, for what it's worth. P.S. I like the 'ae' in Wikipaedia - I miss it in the English Wikipedia. 81.157.157.116 22:55, 28 Januar 2008 (UTC)

Richt eneuch. Ye hae tae be gey canny wi neologisms. A puckle gang a lang wey. -- Derek Ross | News 07:08, 29 Januar 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Publeicity

A'm gaunae wirk on a sey o a letter/email that we cuid send tae Scots leid upsteerers tae lat thaim ken aboot this project. It shuid be up here soon (-ish). Mendor 14:13, 2 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Here a first sey:

Dear (name o person)

Hiv ye haurd o Wikipedia?

Wikipedia is a free internet encyclopedia. It's pit thegither sae that oniebodie can read or edit it, stert thair ain airticles, an wirk thegither tae ettle efter biggin the biggest wab resoorce for wittins in the warld. whit dae youse think? Mendor 16:00, 2 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Looks fine, man. If ye pit a subjeck o "Projeck ti mak a Scots Encyclopaedia" or similar, that should draa their interest an aa. For comparison, here's fit I wrat in my emails:
Kennin o yer interest in Scots and yer sterlin efforts tae promote it, I thocht that ye might want ti ken aboot a Scots encyclopedia project which has newly stairtit. It's pairt o the Wikipedia project an can be foond at http://sco.wikipedia.org/
Richt noo it's nae ower impressive but gin ye're nae acquent wi Wikipedia an ye want ti see whit micht be duin gien time, tak a leuk at http://en.wikipedia.org/ Mynd that fower year ago it wis aboot the size that the Scots version is noo.
Gin ye wuid lyke ti help us mak the Scots Wikipedia grow either in yer ane name or anonymously, we'd be gratefu for ony time and effort that ye micht be able tae spare either ti screive stuff yersel or ti tell ither Scots speikers aboot it.
Aiblins it's worth eikin the bit aboot tellin ither Scots speikers an aboot the state o the Scots wikipedia juist nou, ti whit ye've proponed. -- Derek Ross 16:46, 2 Jul 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Scots speir on the 2011 census

This isna technical or raellie aboot the Wikipedia but A dinna ken whaur else tae pit it:

The'r a consultation the noo on a speir anent Scots in the 2011 UK census. It's open till 1t August 2005. Ye can repone tae the consultation here. This is a gran chance tae influence the guvrenment's policy an recogneition o Scots (we aamaist got a speir on Scots in the 2001 census, but it wisna tae be). A bid aabodie tae gie it a leukie. A juist wantit tae tell ye aw that wir close tae owertakin Kashmiri (कॉशुर / کٲشُر) on the leet! Anerly 34 wikipages tae gang! An eifter that it's juist anither 13 mair airticles afore we bypass Maori (Māori) forby!

But A dae jalouse whit it taks tae git yer name on the hamepage's leet, ye ken unner 100+ airticles (sairly wee prent) acause some wi less airticles than uns are upby! An gin we git oor name upby we wuid maist likely recieve mony mair veesitors. Nou Uiserr

Aye, we'r daein fine. Aa we need is steady contreibutions frae the likes o yersel. Neow airticles are the thing an ye're giein us plenty o thae. -- Derek Ross 14:33, 22 Augist 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. A'm tryin tae mak plenty o new airticles. It's juist that A'm no siccar that ma spellin's richt. Nou Uiserr

Congratulations - you are now over three times as big as mi:Wikipedia Māori. But for its first 20 months it had hardly any contributors except me - and I'm "mi-1". Now it has at least two frequent contributors who grew up with the language, so it may start to catch up with you. With my 70% Scottish ancestry, I (who have never been out of New Zealand) intend to help both. Robin Patterson 23:54, 14 Mairch 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Announcement

Sorry for using the English language here. I thought that the Mercat Cross may be the best place to notify Scots-speaking Wikipedians of two new facilities at the English language edition of Wikipedia:

Scottish Wikipedians' notice board

and:

Scotland Portal

Please take a look, click the Watch tab, sign-up and contribute. All are most welcome!

(If this is not the best place for this notice, please copy it to the approprite sco page where most discussions/debates/announcements are made. Thanks. I am an sco-1 Scots-speaker, but I just do not have the confidence to write in my mither tung.)--Mais oui! 12:29, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Interwiki Bot Status

Hi. I would like to get my interwiki bot YurikBot marked as a bot in your language. The bot is already operating in almost 50 languages, and it would lower the server load and improve the quality of articles if all interwikies are updated at the same time. You can read more or ask questions here. I always run the latest version of the Pywikipediabot (i am also one of the developers of this project). The request for the bot status is here. Please support. Thank you. --Yurik (en) 20:25, 5 Januar 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Learnin Scots

There a puckle fowk at comes ontae the Wiki an asks "Whaur can I lear masel Scots?". Dis fowk think it's a guid idea for us tae mibbe hae a project page (ower an ayont whit Wikipedia:Spellin an grammar dis awreadies), in English mibbe, wi some airtins tae learnin material etc., that's airtit tae frae the front page, for thae fowk tae see as suin's thay come ontae the site? A'm thinkin that that wid be best duin as a Wikibook. Houaniver we micht link sic a wikibook frae the front page. -- Derek Ross 04:36, 20 Februar 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pronunciation Richt, Nicht, etc.

This dinae gae here for ordinar, houaniver Ae dinna ken whar else it shuid gae. Are wirds like "Richt" and "Nicht" ("Right" and "Night" in Inglis) pronounced like there Inglis equivalents, or mair like "Rikt" and "Nikt" ? Canaen 03:06, 12 Apryle 2006 (UTC)

Naether. The letter pair, "ch", is said the wey it is in German words like "Bach" (but nae the wey it is in German words like "reich") rather nor bein' missed oot like it is in English or pronoonced like a "k". The "i" in thae words soonds mair like English "e", forbye, sae a mair richtlike pronoonciation wad soond somethin like "recht", or "necht". -- Derek Ross 03:32, 13 Apryle 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedias without standardized language

Hi and sorry I can't contribute in Scots. There are now many Wikipedia projects in languages that don't have a standardized language, one of the most recent of these project being the Bavarian wikipedia. I think that all these projects are dealing with some common questions: What to do about the variation in dialects and spellings and how to justify these projects? Therefore, I'd like to have a common page for all these projects, something alike to the common page of all the wikipedias in Swiss languages: [1]. I must admit that I have no idea what steps I'd have to take in order to create such a page. I just wanted to ask if there'd be support for this idea on the Scots wikipedia which is one of the oldest and largest wikipedia projects without standardized language. A user of the Alemannic wikipedia: -- j. 'mach' wust ☞ ☏ 12:15, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

I would certainly support something like that in principle. (How would we communicate, though? It'd be a bit ironic, given that most of these non-standardised languages are under threat from dominating ones, for us to communicate in English, the most dominating language of all -- but I suppose it can't be helped. Unless we'd like to adopt my interlanguage of choice?) --Mendor 18:02, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Adminship

Aye so nou that A'm a bureaucrat A can mak fowk intae admeenistrators gin thay want. A'm inclined tae be fair leeberal wi this pouer an gie admin pouer tae maist onie (sairious) contreebutor that wants it. Wad fowk gree wi sicna policy?

The pouers o adminship is:

  • deletin pages
  • flittin pages ower anes that's aareadies there
  • blockin an unblockin uisers
  • haein the pouer tae edit restrictit pages like Special:Allmessages
  • bein able tae rowback vandalised pages wi ae dab on the moose
  • protectin an unprotectin pages (no muckle ca' for thon on this wiki, cept the main page that wis gettin a lot o vandals afore)

Gin fowk dis gree wi this idea, wha's wantin tae be an admeenistrator? Gaunae drap us a line on ma collogue page gin ye dae. Note that ye hiv tae be a registert uiser tae be an admin -- anonymous IPs canna get admin pouers for obvious reasons.

-- Mendor 16:58, 4 Februar 2007 (UTC)

Wad oniebodie like tae comment on the abuin idea? Are we a'richt juist tae dae awa wi the election bit, at least for the nou, an juist hiv fowk that wants tae be gien admin pouers gien thaim (lang's thay'r obviously sairious?) Mendor 16:54, 18 Apryle 2007 (UTC)

I am actually also building the structure for the fundraiser on Meta. We will need people who help to design buttons, translate texts of buttons, documents, sitenotices etc. Should you feel you want to co-operate please let me know. You can reach me on my meta user page or by e-mail at scretella (at) wikimedia (dot) org. If you wish to notify us that you would like to co-operate on translations, it would be nice if you used e-mail and copied the e-mail to me and Aphaia (aphaia (at) gmail (dot) com). Thank you for your attention and I hope to meet you soon! Cheers :-) -- 4 September 2007 Sabine

[edit] Betawiki: better support for your language in MediaWiki

Dear community. I am writing to you to promote a special wiki called Betawiki. This wiki facilitates the localisation of the MediaWiki interface. You have changed many messages here to use your language in the interface, but if you would log in to another wiki, you would not be able to use the interface as well translated as here. We have imported the translations which are done here, but if you wish to contribute to better support of your language in MediaWiki, as well as for many MediaWiki extensions, please visit Betawiki, create an account and request translator privilege.

If you have any further questions, please let me know on my talk page on Betawiki. We will try and assist you as much as possible.

You can also find us on the Freenode IRC network in the channel #mediawiki-i18n where we would be happy to help you get started.

Thank you very much for your attention and I do hope to see some of you on Betawiki soon! Cheers! SPQRobin 17:23, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Betawiki: better support for your language in MediaWiki

Dear community. I am writing to you to promote a special wiki called Betawiki. This wiki facilitates the localisation (l10n) of the MediaWiki interface. You may have changed many messages here to use your language in the interface, but if you would log in to for example the Japanese language Wiktionary, you would not be able to use the interface as well translated as here. In fact, of 1,736 messages in the core of MediaWiki, 5.99% of the messages have been translated. Betawiki also supports the translation of messages for 126 extensions, with 2,174 messages. Many of them are used in WMF projects and they are vital for understanding the wiki. Currently 0.00% of the WMF extension messages have been translated. Translators for over 90 languages contribute their work to MediaWiki this way every month.

If you wish to contribute to better support of your language in MediaWiki, as well as for many MediaWiki extensions, please visit Betawiki, create an account and request translator privileges. You can see the current status of localisation of your language on MediaWiki.org and do not forget to get in touch with others that may already be working on your language on Betawiki.

If you have any further questions, please let me know on my talk page on Betawiki. We will try and assist you as much as possible, for example by importing all messages from a local wiki for you to start with, if you so desire.

You can also find us on the Freenode IRC network in the channel #mediawiki-i18n where we will be happy to help you get started.

Thank you very much for your attention and I do hope to see some of you on Betawiki soon! Thanks, GerardM@Betawiki

  • Currently 48.63% of the MediaWiki messages and 0.19% of the messages of the extensions used by the Wikimedia Foundation projects have been localised. Please help us help your language by localising at Betawiki. This is the recent localisation activity for your language. Thanks, GerardM 21:23, 13 Apryle 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Research "small" Wikipedias

Hello, I do a little research about Wikipedias in "small" or "weak" languages. If you would like to help me answering some questions, I would be grateful if you contact me by e-mail via mia user page.--Ziko 16:51, 20 Apryle 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Bot policy

Hello. To facilitate steward granting of bot access, I suggest implementing the standard bot policy on this wiki. This will involve creating a redirect to this page from Project:Bot policy, and adding a line at the top noting that it is used here. In particular, this policy allows automatic acceptance of known interlanguage linking bots (if this page says that is acceptable), which form the vast majority of such requests.

Please read the text at m:Bot policy before commenting. If you object, please say so; it will be implemented in one week if there is no objection, since it is particularly written to streamline bot requests on wikis with little or no community interested in bot access requests.
