Nel 1983 Tim Burton e Leonard Ripps cominciarono a filmare un cortometraggio, tratto da un'idea di Burton, The Flying Saucers and Me (letteralmente I Dischi Volanti e Me). Il film racconta la vita e le opere di un regista non molto fortunato, né talentuoso (interpretato da Tetsuo Lumière), che è in procinto di realizzare un film prendendo spunto da La guerra dei mondi, quindi sui dischi volanti. Il progetto non venne mai completato interamente ma ne esiste un primo abbozzo, a tutti gli effetti un cortometraggio, realizzato nel 1983. Burton riprese poi l'idea del regista appassionato di alieni e assolutamente non dotato di talento per creare Ed Wood, basandosi sulla vita del cosiddetto "peggior regista mai esististo" Edward D. Wood Jr..
