Martin Gilbert

Sir Martin Gilbert (Londra, 25 ottobre 1936) è uno storico inglese, famoso come biografo ufficiale di Winston Churchill e come uno dei più noti studiosi dell'Olocausto, ha pubblicato 72 libri di cui molti tradotti anche in italiano.

Gilbert passò parte dell'infanzia in Canada dove molti ragazzini inglesi erano stai mandati per proteggerli dalle incursioni tedesche sull'Inghilterra. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale si diplomò presso l'Highgate School di Londra, per poi laurearsi in storia al Magdalen College di Oxford nel 1960, avendo come professore A. P. J. Percivale.

Le sue opere più celebri, e maggiormente diffuse in Italia sono la monumentale biografia di Winston Churchill, la sua Grande storia della prima guerra mondiale, la Grande storia della seconda guerra mondiale, e molti volumi sull'Olocausto, le sue opere sono caratterizzate da una profonda attenzione per l'aspetto umano della storia, ad esempio nelle storie della due guerre mondiali, le descrizioni di tattiche e strategie lasciano spazio a lettere e testimonianze dal fronte, che l'autore ha raccolto personalmente presso le famiglie dei soldati.
Nel 1995, è stato insignito dell'ordine dell'Impero Britannico

dalla Regina Elisabetta II. Gilbert è anche fellow onorario del Merton College dell'università di Oxford. Gilbert vive a Londrae dal 2002 è Distinguished Fellow dell'Hillsdale College in Michigan. Il 31 agosto del 2006 che avrebbe accettato per cinque anni una cattedra alla facoltà di storia dell'University of Western Ontario in Canada. Nel 2005 lo storico rischiò di perdere la vita nella metropolitana di Londra, durante gli attentati del 7 luglio.
