Miss Universe 1998 was held at Stan Sheriff Arena, Honolulu, USA on May 12, 1998. Brook Lee, Miss Universe 1997, of USA crowned Wendy Fitzwilliam of Trinidad and Tobago as Miss Universe 1998. There were 81 contestants who competed for the crown. A clip of the pageant was briefly shown in the 2000 movie The Next Best Thing starring Madonna and Rupert Everett.

In the 1998 Parade of Nations, the delegates no longer wore their national costumes like previously. Instead, they all wore similar dresses and viewers also did not get to hear the delegates' voices as they were all introduced by a voice-over.
Instead, viewers get to see all the national costumes in a 3-minute long video in the middle of the telecast.
Miss Honduras, Dania Prince would later go on to win the Miss Earth 2003 title.
