Miss Sweden (in Swedish: Fröken Sverige), is a Swedish beauty pageant, qualifying the winner for the global contest Miss Universe. It has been sponsored from 1949 until 1999 by the magazine VeckoRevyn, from 2000 to 2004 by the television channel TV3 and from 2005 to the present by the swimwear producer Panos Emporio.

[edit] Pageant history
The pageant has a long tradition of sending the national delegates to vacation abroad, for photos in swimsuits and evening gowns to viewers, such as Dubai (1996), Canary Islands (1997) and Barbados (2002).
In 2004 Fröken Sverige lost the Miss World franchise to Miss Sweden World Inc., conducted by Miss Norway Models Agency.
In 2005, the pageant supervisor failed to send Swedish contestants to international beauty pageants due to protests and threats from several feminist groups. This was similar to the threats in 2002, when two feminists walked on the stage and caused chaos during a telecast of the Miss Sweden selection. That year the pageant became also historical, when an interracial winner was picked for the first time in pageant history. There was no jury, just a "suggestion panel" and the telephone company claimed the next day that the broadcaster had cheated and the real winner was actually someone else.
This pageant has introduced models such as Lena Olin and Jessica Folcker.
Hillevi Rombin, remains as the only Miss Universe winner to date to have died.
[edit] Current contest
The franichise was bought in 2005 by Moore Magazine but was re-built by Greek swimsuit designer Panos Papadoupolous in partnership with the television network TV8. In the new concept, oral presentations by the delegates was used both in Swedish and English. in 2007, the competition was broadcasted in eight countries, due the English presentations.
[edit] Broadcasting
The television networks through the years have been Swedish TV4 (1992-2000), TV3 (2001-2005) and TV8 (2006-). Star! Scandinavia is broadcasting the Miss Universe pageant for Swedish viewers. License of broadcasting has Modern Times Group.

[edit] Hostings
1992-1994: This was the first time the pageant was broadcasted. The promoters were a commercial channel together with a magazine released for females. The readers picked their favourites and the winner was crowned by a jury in a night club for celebrities. The Miss Universe pageant was shown on Swedish television for the first time ever a few months later.
1995-2000: The stage was removed to a television studio. The readers of a magazine picked their favourites and the semi-finalists were taken to tropical islands abroad, for photos to the viewers. In the year of 2000, the supervisor, Emma Hamberg, which was new on the post, removed the pageant from the schedule, stating that the pageant is disregarding to women.
2001-2003: The pageant got a new promoter, for the first time in 53 years with no interruption. The pageant became a reality series. The viewers followed the lives of the contestants, on their way to the West Indies, such as Barbados in 2001.
2004: A magazine bought the pageant from the former sponsor, but received criticism from the society, in protest that the magazine releases pornographic productions. Former winner refused to crown the new titleholder.
2005: Lack of interest and no pageant.
2006 to the present: A decision was made to rebuild the pageant to modern values.
