The House of the Rising Sun è una canzone folk americana. Il testo ha come argomento una vita sfortunata ed è ambientata a New Orleans. L'esecuzione della canzone da parte del gruppo inglese The Animals, nel 1964, è generalmente considerata la più famosa ed è stata la numero uno in classifica sia negli Stati Uniti, sia nel Regno Unito.
Al pari di molte altre classiche ballate folk, la paternità del testo di "The House of the Rising Sun", a volte chiamata "Rising Sun Blues", è dubbia. Lo studioso del folklore Alan Lomax, autore nel 1941 della raccolta di canzoni Our Singing Country, scriveva che la melodia era presa da una ballata tradizionale inglese ed il testo era stato scritto da Georgia Turner e Bert Martin, una coppia di abitanti del Kentucky. Altri studiosi propendono per ipotesi diverse, sebbene quella di Lomax sia generalmente considerata la più plausibile. L'espressione "House of the Rising Sun" è un eufemismo per indicare una casa chiusa, tuttavia non è noto se la casa descritta nel testo sia un luogo reale o fittizio. Tra le ipotesi più accreditate c'è quella che la vuole situata proprio a New Orleans: la notizia del suo abbattimento, avvenuto nel 2007, ha trovato spazio nelle pagine di qualche quotidiano statunitense.
Fu incisa in italiano dai Los Marcellos Ferial: il testo, opera di Mogol e Vito Pallavicini, stravolge completamente il senso della canzone, trasformandola in una storia d'amore.
