Delta Force: Land Warrior is a tactical first-person shooter (FPS) video game. It is the third game in the Delta Force series produced by Novalogic, and is the sequel to Delta Force 2 (DF2). DFLW was sold as stand-alone game and also as part of the "Delta Force Trilogy," a 3-disc set which included Delta Force 1 (DF1) and DF2.

Delta Force: Land Warrior is infrequently referred to as Delta Force 3 or DF3. DFLW, LW, or "Land Warrior" are commonly used by players to denote the game. DFLW was a major departure from previous versions in the Delta Force series by including realistic weapon recoil and 5 different player-selectable characters. Each DFLW character has unique combinations of strengths and weaknesses.

Some of these unique character traits are running speed, reloading time, and weapon accuracy. Players can also select various combinations of characters and weapons, a unique freedom newer FPS games do not offer. For example, a player can select the medic character and use a sniper rifle or a machine gun. The sniper can use a grenade launcher. The grenadier can use an underwater assault rifle (UAR). There are no character or weapon restrictions in DFLW, any selectable character can use any selectable weapon.

DFLW gives players the option of single-player games or multiplayer games online. Single-player games utilize enemy soldiers commonly referred to as "bots" to provide competition and are controlled by the game's artificial intelligence or AI. Some bots are friendly and are part of a player's team but are considerably less in number and have generally poor fighting ability.

The multiplayer game option allows players to compete against human opponents. This option requires players to have an internet connection which is necessary to connect to DFLW game servers. DFLW was originally designed to be played online utilizing dialup internet connections. DFLW game servers can be hosted by individual players, or players can log onto official Novalogic servers which require a Novalogic account. Novalogic game servers and player accounts are free.

Additionally, Novalogic game servers keep a wide range of player statistical information in a database which all players can access and see. Novalogic game servers are often referred to as "stat" servers. In the early 2000s during DFLW's height of popularity, Novalogic offered up to 50 slot player servers. Novalogic continues to host player servers even throughout September of 2007, albethey considerably fewer than before, with the quantity falling below 10 stat servers available for players to choose.

[edit] Multiplayer

The main attraction of DFLW is the exciting multiplayer option. DFLW is played all over the world, 24/7. Although the DFLW gaming community is smaller than it once was, there is still a strong and loyal following who play daily. As with other video games, some DFLW players have formed computer gaming squads sometimes referred to as clans. Squads are normally comprised of a founder/leader and squad members. Squads normally have websites and forums which serve to promote their squad among other squads, and to act as an information/communication portal for squad members and other members of the gaming community.

Squads are normally considered either "active," which means they currently compete with other active squads in formal battle, or "inactive" where they are removed from such consideration, usually due to lack of members or an unwillingness to engage in combat. Battles are normally coordinated by one representative from each squad. This person is typically either the squad's leader or a member the leader trusts. Battles can consist of informal scrimmages, formal matches, or official tournaments. Nearly all battles are between 2 squads. DFLW, however, also provides the option for 4 squads to battle each other simultaneously, though the 4-squad option has rarely been used.

Usually, one of the squads fighting will host the game server for the battle. This is sometimes a point of contention in pre-battle negotiation. Occasionally, a neutral, third party will host a battle to ensure impartiality or to make playing conditions more equal regarding player ping times, often referred to as "lag." Ping times are a very important point to consider, since geographical distance from a game server adversely effects gameplay as distance increases.

Outside of formal battles between squads, some squads also host their own games in "public" servers that are open to all players. These servers do not require a Novalogic account to play.

[edit] Game Types

Attack & Defend, Capture the flag, Cooperative, Deathmatch, Flagball, King Of The Hill, Search & Destroy, Team Deathmatch, and Team King Of The Hill.

Variations of the above game types also exist. For example, a player, or hosting squad, can create a game type normally referred to as "Razorball". Razorball is a type of Flagball in which all weaponry other than knives is restricted. The game maps are frequently an expansive field in which players have room to move freely - some hosts, for example, prefer to create their own maps which can resemble football/soccer fields - with a flag in the middle of the map. Such a game type requires players to use knifing skills, and strategies to evade opposing players, to carry the flag to their team's respective "goal". This game type is usually played with two teams.

The game also includes stats for games played in official nova servers. The stats can be found on the NovaWorld website.

[edit] Other Features

A map editor was included with the game. The map editor allows players to modify existing maps, or create new, custom maps. Because of the method used to create the executable file, it cannot be run on computers using an operating system newer than Windows 98. Third party editors that run on newer operating systems are available. Such editors that are able to run on new operating systems are available for download on various sites that either host various files for many games, or are dedicated to hosting files for download specifically for Delta Force games, such as Delta Force Barracks[1]. Squads that prefer to host custom-made maps may also have a link to a version of a map editor on their squad site.
