Hebrew Wikipedia (Hebrew: ויקיפדיה: האנציקלופדיה החופשית‎; Wikipedia: HaEntziklopedia HaHofshit, Hebrew IPA: [wikiˈpedia haʔentsikloˈpedia haχofˈʃit]) is the Hebrew edition of Wikipedia. This edition began in July 2003 and has over 77,000 articles as of June 1, 2008.

Contents

[edit] Milestones

  • May 2005 The Hebrew Wikipedia reached its 20,000th article.
  • July 2006 The Hebrew Wikipedia reached its 40,000th article.
  • December 24, 2006: The 50,000th article was written.
  • July 2007: The 60,000th article was written.

[edit] Features

The Hebrew Wikipedia is renowned for its extensive series of mathematical articles which cover topics from the basics of calculus and linear algebra up to advanced topics of functional analysis, abstract algebra and algebraic geometry.[citation needed]

Another major area of work is history, putting a focus on Jewish history and the History of Israel. Such articles often include original photos taken by the writers.

In 2006 the Elef Millim project (English: Thousand Words project) was created; its purpose is to enrich Wikipedia with free images. Since 2007, as part of this project, groups of Israeli Wikipedians meet for field trips in various places in Israel in order to take pictures and bring members of the Hebrew Wikipedia community together.

[edit] Contrast with other language Wikipedias

As of July 2006, the Hebrew Wikipedia has one of the highest amounts of bytes per article, and the highest of all editions on Wikipedia with over 20,000 articles.[2]

Whereas the English Wikipedia requires a general consensus for deleting articles (hence deletion discussion is not considered to be a voting process), the Hebrew Wikipedia has adopted a policy of deletion upon a 55% majority, with no minimum number of votes.[3] In these votes, only registered users with one month seniority and at least 100 edits in the article, image, category or template namespaces in the past 90 days can vote.
