[edit] About me
I'm Yan Nasonov from Petah Tikva, Israel, going by the alias Ynhockey because I once played hockey and have had this alias for over 6 years.
I was born in 1986 in Novosibirsk, Soviet Union. My family moved to Arad, Israel on January 11, 1993. I loved living in Arad then, but now realize what a waste of time it was. For anyone who hasn't clicked on the wikilink, Arad is a small town in the middle of nowhere. We thankfully moved to Petah-Tikva in December 2000. It has a feel of a city unlike Arad and is close to all the major Israeli population centers. I have also lived in Burnaby, B.C., Canada in between the years.
Now I serve in the IDF's Military Police Corps (for anyone who cares, I wrote that article).

I found out about Wikipedia around 2003 (might've been even 2002) but never bothered to edit or register. I can't remember why now, but it's probably because I didn't think I could add anything useful (even though at that time Wikipedia was very small). Also I only started to read Wikipedia namespace pages in 2005, and therefore didn't know any policies and made many edits which might constitute as vandalism (both using an IP address and this username). Now I understand Wikipedia better though and contribute frequently. I hope to become a sysop one day, but it's not that important since regular users are already given a fair amount of freedom.
In terms of my Wikipedian ideology, I tend to be an inclusionist, especially in regards to allegedly superfluous info in articles, but will sometimes take the stance of a deletionist when I don't think an article is relevant to an encyclopedia. However, I'm almost always against mergism.
Generally though, I will stick by my interpretation of the Wikipedia policies and write with a(n) NPOV.
[edit] Contributions
- See main article (yes, it's an actual article with contribution details, not the special page).
- See my edit count on enwiki, hewiki.
I've contributed to Wikipedia in different areas (mostly minor edits), but notably have edited and/or created many Israel-related articles. I'm also responsible for writing about half of all the Bleach-related articles (numbering over 50).
Recently I've been editing Israel-related articles more and more (Israel's geography, people, organizations).
In the future I might go into the Arab-Israeli conflict more, since it's one of the areas where I know the most, but so far potential accusations of POV pushing have deterred me from contributing much to those articles.
Looking back at the above paragraph, I'd say I was right - nearly every single significant edit I've made to an Arab-Israeli conflict-related article so far has been dubbed, directly or indirectly, a POV push. This is considering my views are not extreme by any measure; I've seen more extreme users blasted to the moon and back for their edits. Eek, the non-joys of NPOV.
I also make frequent minor edits (with several hundred spelling corrections in March-April 2007) and sometimes monitor new articles.
As you may have noticed, I also contribute to the Hebrew Wikipedia sometimes. Certain issues discourage me from becoming a full-time contributor, but I've made around 450 edits at the time of this writing (including 15 new articles).
One might ask, if Russian is probably my best language, why don't I contribute to the Russian Wiki as well? The reason is simple - the Russian Wiki is still, in my honest (but not so humble) opinion, a trash can. Half of its articles are copyright violations (or not, because in Russia information is more free, although it wouldn't qualify as fair use under US laws), there are tons of tiny unimportant articles, and half the articles require serious cleanup. Templates are usually not well-made (the spoiler warning, for instance, is so huge it's usually larger than the spoiler content). In general, RuWiki just gives me a bad feel. Maybe someday I will start editing it though, maybe as avidly as EnWiki (RuWiki doesn't seem to have the bureaucracy problems of HeWiki).

Sometimes I go out and take pictures of things. Here is a random picture I took (to be updated once in a while):

[edit] Userboxes
Because I'm fairly bored nowadays (end of 2005), I searched for many userboxes to add to my page. Although all the listed boxes are true (unless someone vandalizes my page), don't take it too seriously.
A note about the Babel rankings; I was fairly loose when assigning them to myself since the descriptions on this page were hopelessly inadequate. I've since discussed and edited the descriptions, but IMO they are still not perfect. But for instance, I use Ja-2 and Fr-1. My French vocabulary is probably at least as big as the Japanese and grammar knowledge is similar, and in fact, because of the difficulties of Kanji, I can freely read (pronounce) French text but not Japanese. However, I feel I know Japanese better, and the templates all say 'speak', which does not require reading skills.
