Richard Dorson

Richard Mercer Dorson (født 1916, død 1981) var en amerikansk folklorist, forfatter og professor, han var sjef for Folklore Institute ved Indiana University. Dorson ble fil.dr. i historie ved Harvard i 1942, og kom til å undervise ved Michigan State University i perioden 1943 til 1957. Dorson underviste frem til sin død 1981 ved universitetet i Indiana.

Dorson kritiserte gjennom sin term fakelore kommersialiseringen av tradisjonene, og spesielt Paul Bunyan.

Dorson har vært omtalt som den amerikanske folkloristikkens far ("father of American folklore")^[1] og som en dominerende kraft innenfor folkloristikken.^[2] Folkloristikken stiller i følge Dorson strenge krav til polemisk innstilling, kildekritikk, feltarbeid og litteraturstudier.^[3] Dorson mente dessuten at ingen fagdisiplin var så misforstått som nettopp folkloristikken.^[4].

Dorson bidro med to begrep i folkloristikken. Den ene brukes helst bare i engelsktalende land; "urban legend", dvs. vandresagn. En urban legend er en troverdig historie som aldri har skjedd.^[5]

Dorson skapte i anledning en debatt med forfatteren James Stevens neologismen fakelore.^[6] Dorson avskrev Stevens’ bok om Paul Bunyan som fakelore, dvs. som et syntetisk produkt som gjorde krav på å være autentisk muntlig tradisjon, for å forvirre folk.^[6]. Dorson gjorde feltarbeid blant afroamerikanere i Michigan, Upper Peninsula og i visse andre regioner i USA. Han har blant annet også gjort studier i japansk folklore.
