Mercedes Maria Theresa Immaculata McQueen (previously Owen) is a fictional character on the long-running British Channel 4 television soap opera Hollyoaks.
She is played by Jennifer Metcalfe and made her debut in June 2006, the second McQueen character on the show, after Michaela.

[edit] Character history
Mercedes is the third child of Myra McQueen. Her father never appeared on the show, but did have some contact with her and her sister Jacqui. Mercedes cares about her siblings, but is also deeply insecure, and has lashed out at those she loves on more than one occasion.
From the start, Mercedes was a troublemaker. Within hours of arriving she threatened to sue Sophie Burton for 'maiming' her during a massage at Evissa.
[edit] Relationship with Russ
She made an enemy of Sophie and gets her claws into Russ Owen. Russ Owen kissed her so he could get proof of her with her neck-brace off, but things went wrong when Mercedes got her own back by revealing to Sophie what she and Russ got up to. On the day that Sophie died in the explosion, Russ was cheating on her with Mercedes.
Mercedes fell out with Russ after Jessica published his research on the McQueens in the students' paper. They made up after Russ sold his wakeboard to buy her mother, Myra, a car, and Mercedes was touched he would go to such lengths to win her back.
When Russ admitted to Mercedes that he had crabs, he accused her of sleeping with someone else. That night, Mercedes slept with Warren Fox, in the morning, her and Russ found out that it was Myra that had crabs, and was spreading them around with dirty towels (due to the washing machine being broken).

Mercedes and Russ reconciled, but she slept with Warren again on Tina's hen night. Feeling guilty, and perhaps having clearer judgment due to cheating on Russ, Mercedes then asked Russ to marry her (whilst he was planning on asking her the same thing) at the reception for older sister Jacqui's sham wedding to Aleksander.
On the build up to her and Russ' wedding, Mercedes booked the same day as sister Tina's wedding, knowing it's Nana McQueen's birthday, Myra convinced them to have a double wedding. The wedding looked like it was nearly off though when Russ' ex Dannii Carbone returned and Mercedes believed they were back together but Russ and Mercedes sorted it out and Danni left Hollyoaks Village behind. Mercedes once again slept with Warren behind Russ's back during Tina's Hen Night. However, Jacqui found out about the affair the next day because of Mercedes' guilt-ridden demeanor.
When Warren used Mercedes as his alibi (regarding the attempted murder of Clare Cunningham) , Mercedes completely denied it to save her wedding. Warren's girlfriend Louise crashed the wedding to confront Mercedes, but Tina lied about her whereabouts the night of Clare's fall. This resulted in Warren's continued incarceration and Mercedes being plagued by guilt.

With Warren's court case fast approaching, Mercedes was receiving threats and pressure from everyone who knows. In August, Russ found out she has been visiting Warren in jail and it didn't take him long to figure out why.
Mercedes' conscience caught up with her and she appeared as a witness at Warren's trial, as she came in at the last minute. After Russ found a note from her in the apartment saying "I'm so sorry. I love you" and he headed to the court in time to see Mercedes takes the stand. She told the court that she was with Warren on the night that Clare was pushed. After hearing that she was in bed with Warren, Russ stormed out of the court room and she attempted to follow him but is stopped when the judge threatens to hold her for interrupting the trial. Her statement later results in Warren's release.
She found Russ and tried to explain she did the right thing not letting an innocent man go to prison, but Russ dished the insults to Mercedes that he should have stayed with Sophie and if it wasn't for Mercedes she would still be alive and says that he wants nothing more to do with her.
[edit] Life after Russ
Mercedes was working at the relaunched Dog in the Pond as a barmaid working for Frankie and Jack Osborne, Kris Fisher, Steph Dean and Darren Osborne. When everyone found out John Paul McQueen and Craig Dean were having an affair, Mercedes defended her brother against Frankie's attacks, and Frankie fired her. This was a major shift for Mercedes, as she had had a very homophobic reaction when John Paul had come out earlier that year. A few days later, Frankie told Myra that Mercedes could come back if she wanted to, and Mercedes did.
She also went to her brother John Paul McQueen's house warming party but wasn't there long enough to get affected by carbon monoxide poisoning as she went off with Danny Valentine.
Mercedes was furious when she learned Russ and her sister Carmel were seeing each other. Although the relationship was short-lived, her ire was further raised when Nana McQueen falsely claimed she saw Carmel and Russ kissing at hospital after they were released. Nana later recanted her story, but Mercedes got into a nasty catfight with Carmel (and soon Jacqui) which ended only when Nana turned a hose on them. The tension between Carmel and Mercedes would last for some months to come.
[edit] One night stand with Tony
On the 6 November 2007, after an argument with Jacqui, a drunken Mercedes and a drunken Tony slept together. It was revealed, following a subsequent pregnancy test, that Mercedes was pregnant. She later revealed to a stunned Tony that she was having an abortion and that it was his child, given that she had only slept with one man (him) in the past month. After almost being persuaded to give the child once it was born to Jacqui, who did not know Tony was the father, Mercedes realised she could not cope watching her sister bring up her child and had an abortion. The song "Happy Ending" by Mika plays throughout Mercedes having an abortion.
When Mercedes found out Tony and Jacqui were going to use Tina as a surrogate, she was virulently opposed, and repeatedly threatened Tony that she would tell Jacqui the truth. Tony called her bluff, daring her to tell Jacqui the truth. Mercedes kept quiet, but continued to oppose the idea. When she learned Dominic had told Tina he would leave her if she kept the baby, she nearly convinced Tina to have an abortion. Tony begged her to let him and Jacqui have this chance for a child.

In January 2008, Mercedes entered the Dog's Mr. Hollyoaks competition, and won, in spite of being a female. Rhys Ashworth finished as runner-up. He left his wallet behind. Mercedes found it and dropped it off at his house the next day. When he told her no one else was around, they proceeded to have sex in every room of the house. The next day, they had sex at his family store, Drive'n'Buy. Russ walked in on them as they were putting their clothes back on and told her she had no class, and that better Rhys than him. The following day, after ridiculing Carmel over her police fitness test, she had sex with him again. Another encounter was broken up by the return of Gilly Roach and Rhys' half-sister Beth Clement.
Mercedes sensed Beth did not have a high opinion of her, reinforced when Beth tried to shame Mercedes for not being traveled enough. What Mercedes did not realise was Beth and Rhys were lovers and the reason Rhys had repeatedly missed dates with her was to sleep with Beth. After another broken date, Mercedes almost caught Rhys and Beth in bed (Beth hid before Mercedes' arrival but she still suspected Rhys had been with another woman) and told him off. When Rhys tried to make it up to her she covered him in garlic bread and shoved a garlic ball in his mouth, thus ending the relationship.

When Dog manager Darren made new efforts to be assertive, he fired Mercedes for tardiness, with Mercedes claiming she'd quit. Jacqui forced her sister to join her in working at Tony's restaurant, Il Gnosh. Mercedes later overheard Tony talking on the phone trying to get someone to stop calling him. Immediately assuming Tony was having an affair, she told Jacqui. She was disgusted when Jacqui didn't break up with him, since he was only talking to his son Harry. With her debts rising, Mercedes began to bribe Tony to keep her silence about their one night stand. At first Tony claimed it was an idle threat, knowing Jacqui would hate her just as much. Mercedes retorted saying that while Jacqui may hate her at first, and may be even slap her around, she is family and will eventually be forgiven, while she will never forgive him. Tony later paid her £350 to keep her quiet. However Jacqui seen Tony giving her money and, knowing about Mercedes money problems, assumed that she had asked Tony for a loan. She later demanded the money back and insisted Mercedes work for the money
[edit] Aftermath of Beth and Rhys's affair
Mercedes has recently discovered that her boyfriend/ lover, Rhys Ashworth has been sleeping with his half-sister, Beth Clement all along and has been left shattered by the truth even after her younger sister, Michela told her and Mercedes refused to believe it.
