    (Courtesy: Ganeshk at Discussion Board).
  • The Wikipedia 1.0 Assessment statistics for India related articles show there are 51 Featured Articles, 5 Class-A articles, 16 Good Articles, 101 Class-B articles, 167 Start-Class articles and more than 4000 Stubs. There were more than 10000 unassessed articles related to India.
What's New?
  • Indian Administrators: There are 21 Indian Administrators in Wikipedia at the last count. The recent Wikipedians to be successful at RFA were Lostintherush and Shyam Bihari.
  • Featured Articles: West Bengal (nom) and Syed Ahmed Khan (nom) were the last two articles from our WikiProject that were granted FA status.
Looking forward toward more contributions from you! Happy Editing
Note from Editor's Desk
  • Welcome. It has been weeks and months since the idea of newsletter was mooted among the WikiProject India Community. This would be our first full-fledged edition of our Newsletter, and we'd like to start by saying we are very happy to have you among us.
  • This is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips here. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. If you have received or given any barnstars recently, do let us know.
  • Advertisements for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome. We'll run special sections, and recurring columns in the coming issues.
This edition special
  • Cartography Department (Shortcut:WP:INMAP): The Department of Cartography within the WikiProject India is a group of wikipedians who work on providing quality maps related to India. Their contributions gain more significance as we try to provide more information on places, districts and states of India. As a thumb rule, maps serve better if they are in SVG format. The location maps by the cartography department has helped us include location information based on latitudes and longitudes for a give place within India. The Indian Roadways map is a featured image, one amongst the few best road maps in the world. Still, there is more work to be done. There are 604 districts in India (see List of districts of India), and each district page needs a map of that district. You can help too. Contact the Cartography Department to learn how you can help in making the best maps in Wikipedia to be India-related!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may mention it at WikiProject India Outreach Department.

Provide us with ur news tips here.

[edit] Hello!

Hi! Don't see you much nowadays. How are you? Busy in real life? I am also a bit infrequent these days.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:34, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Well, in fact, I have been somewhat frequent in last 15–20 days. West Bengal got featured status. Was busy with the FAC. And some trivial works here and there. Also launched Portal: West Bengal. Thanks to some good users, the portal is quite alive, I mean has not become static.--Dwaipayan (talk) 07:01, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hyderabad

Tobais is one shrewed person. He intentionally picked on the time when I was away so that he could fire away his POV without having me contain him with the current proposal. Next, he chose a rather secluded spot in Hyderabad to enforce his views, rather than a a general page to discuss it, considering it has greater ramifications. I know for a fact that he has always shunned from discussing India related policies on Indian project wikipages. Lastly, he has been referred to Arbcom for his unilateral style in making changes without discussion. I dont know what has materialised out of it.

I was wondering if we can reopen the debate on the dab style? =Nichalp «Talk»= 00:16, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] R N Kao

Yes I feel too that the articles need to be merged, can you do the needful? Legaleagle86 09:44, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

I think the full name would be better so I would go for Rameshwar Nath Kao. Legaleagle86 09:51, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Roy Arundhati

[edit] Request to Look Into Arundhati Roy page

Hi there, I have run into a content-dispute with another person, and asked him for opinions as to why he totally removed all my edits RV to a old version, including Images etc, and plain formatting over the Arundhati Roy article. If you do have time, please look into it. --பராசக்தி 06:59, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] About "this" and Romila

I was on dial-up the last two days, and couldnt get a page to load decently... That edit on the Abdul Kalam page was an error. I thought I was removing vandalism, but actually the reverse happened. So I had to revert back. The Romila page seems to be in peace now. If there is any more probs, just ping me. And..er...ROTFL!!--thunderboltz(Deepu) 15:14, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Naa... it just tickled my funny bones. I thought you were being sarcastic on that comment.--thunderboltz(Deepu) 16:16, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
So how is Remo coming up? Ready for a PR?--thunderboltz(Deepu) 16:16, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume I, Issue 3 - December 2006

Project News
  • Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
  • New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.
  • Members List: The old members list is being phased out to give way for the new members list. New members are requested to add their names to the new members list. As the newsletter grows, further issues of the Project Newsletter will be delivered to those enlisted in the new list. So dash down now, to check if ur name is in there.

Note from Editor's Desk
  • Welcome to the December 2006 edition of our newsletter. Time flies past like matter into the black hole. It is interesting to notice that we are already into the last month for the year of 2006. 2006 saw discussions and development beyond realisation. In the world of Wikipedia where quality counts than quantity, we have come a long way. We've made better than 'nothing', to say the least, and even that is an achievement. I take this opportunity to thank everyone including those who have dotted the i's and crossed the t's.
  • As before, we'd like to stress, this is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. If you have received or given any barnstars recently, do let us know. Sponsored content for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome. We'll be very happy to include them here.
  • Before we sign off, Advance New Year Wishes, everyone.

  • How to?: The "how to" part of assessment is very simple. Just head on to the talk page of any India related page and you'll find the {{WP India}} template. Simply classify the article based on the content and the criteria mentioned here. You can find the detailed instructions here. If you think it may qualify for GA/FA status, first consider submitting the article for peer review.

[edit] Thank you for your support

Thank you for your support in the RfA on my behalf. It is an honor to have received your expression of confidence. To be chosen as an administrator requires a high level of confidence by a broad section of the community. Although I received a great deal of support, at this time I do not hold the level of confidence required, and the RfA did not pass. It is my wish that I will continue to deserve your confidence. Sincerely, --BostonMA talk 22:21, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 1 - January 2007

Project News
  • Project tagging:After a brief edit war over the addition of {{WP India}} to ancient archaeological sites now located in Pakistan, a "pre" parameter was introduced to remove the ROI flag from the template for pre-1947 articles, following discussion. After another large discussion on ANI alleging that the automated tagging by Ganeshbot and LostBot was "nationalistic", Ganeshbot was briefly blocked. Currently, the bots are again in action.
  • Swastika on Hinduism templates:Recently, an extremely large and at times emotional debate broke out regarding the use of the swastika on Hinduism templates, given its association with Nazism. As a result, {{Hindu Links}} now contains an educational message about the use of the swastika, as discussion on a more permanent resolution continues.

[edit] WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 2 - March 2007

Project News
  • Jimbo's visit to India and the WikiCamp in Chennai: Jimbo recently visited India in late February and early March on wiki work. This included a trip to a WikiCamp in Chennai. The one day conference attracted 300 participants from across India and beyond dealt with issues facing wikis ([1]). It was widely covered by the press, eg The Hindu( [2]), which cited the efforts of Bhadani (edit count), Sundar (leadership on Tamil Wikipedia) and Ganeshk (Creation of Ganeshbot to create articles on Indian towns from census figures). Ganeshk himself travelled from California to attend the conference.
  • Wikipedia Weekly 15: Wikipedia Weekly, a informal Wikipedians' program that purports to give "A weekly audio roundup of Wikipedia happenings with news, interviews and roundtable discussions" recently interviewed two prominent editors Rama's Arrow and Ragib(listen). The entire 34 minute interview was entirely about the world of Indian subcontinent wiki-happenings, and was the first episode which was not entirely dominated by discussion of wiki-politics and wiki-bureaucracy, with the host Witty lama praising the efficiency of the project and its proliferation of featured content. Rama's Arrow cited the team spirit, friendship and respect among project members in discussing its success and FA productivity, as well as discussing subcontinental wiki-conflict. Ragib talked also of his public campaign to raise awareness of the Bengali Wikipedia in his native Bangladesh, which has seen a 30-fold increase in article count over the past year.

[edit] Romila Thapar

i removed the Arun Shourie stuff as negative information that is not fully sourced (after my request for a quote went unanswered). my concern is that Shourie might have broad-brushed - alleged broad misconduct by unspecified historians and restricted to much narrower and specific criticism of individuals, which is why i requested the quote. i'm particularly concerned after reading stuff like "Arun Shourie proves that Marxist historians have controlled and misused important institutions like...", (here, emph mine) which i think is a misreading or overstatement of what a book like this does. don't u think it's better to get hold of a proper quote and then re-add the paragraph i deleted? Doldrums 06:34, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

thanks hydkat. i'm aware of the controversy over this article. but i don't think "helps to stop edit warring" is a sufficient reason to keep doubtful, negative info about a living person. an alternative is removal is to retain something like "Shourie criticises T. in his ...", but remove the specifics of the criticism till we find a quote. that sounds ok? [edit] Hi

Hi! How are you doing? I see you have voted for Hyderabad in INCOTW. I hope it can at least be improved to be a Good Article. In fact, a few months back, I planned to work on the article, but could not be possible. During the week when it is INCOTW, could you please be available? Improving the article is needed asa we have a plan to go for a Featured Topic candidacy for Indian megacities. User:Sumanthk is also a regular contributor to the article. The article has moderate amount of content, and lacks citation. In fact, you can try to improve the article at any time, without waiting for the INCOTW :) Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:05, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:O_Meri_Munni.ogg

Thanks for uploading Image:O_Meri_Munni.ogg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 21:06, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Rationale now asserted - "Thank you for your co-operation" :) ShakespeareFan00 13:59, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Tubla N Flute.ogg

Thanks for uploading Image:Tubla N Flute.ogg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 02:15, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Maruti_versa.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Maruti_versa.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 21:57, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
