Marimallappa was a bakshi, or department head, in the court of the Wodeyar dynasty, which ruled the state of Mysore in India from 1399 to 1947.
Being childless, he gave away his fortune for education. Marimallappa High School in Mysore is named after him, as are Marimallappa's Junior College, Marimallappa's College and Marimallappa Education Institute.
