Fear of the Dark foi o último álbum que o Bruce Dickinson gravou com o Iron Maiden antes de ir se dedicar a sua carreira solo. Blaze Bailey foi colocado no lugar de Bruce Dickinson, que voltou para a banda em 2000.

Algumas músicas com pegada mais "thrash" no álbum fizeram muito sucesso nos Estados Unidos e fez com que o álbum fosse um sucesso de vendas no país. Em 1998 foi relançado junto com um CD bônus. Este album conseguiu agradar a todos os fans, e serviu de consolo para banda, visto que o anterior , No Prayer for the Dying, nao alcançou os objetivos esperados. Conseguiu vender mais cópias em alguns lugares que o lendário The Number of The Beast.
