The beach in the distance is Haratonga Beach on the East Coast (Pacific) of Great Barrier Island. The nearer beaches are on the Northern fringe of Haratonga Bay. The entire area is managed by the New Zealand Department of Conservation and freely open to the public, although there is a small charge to camp overnight.
