The modern use of the term Scandinavia rises from the Scandinavist political movement, which was active in the middle of the 19th century, both revolving around the Danish-German dispute over the sovereignty of Schleswig. In the First War of Schleswig (1848-1850), Sweden-Norway supported Denmark with considerable military force. In the Second War of Schleswig (1864), the Swedish Parliament denounced the King's promises of military support, effectively ending the movement.
The movement had mostly been supported by students, and was encouraged by the king of Sweden, since King Frederick VII of Denmark had no heirs. If the movement had been succesful, the king of Sweden-Norway would have ascended the Danish throne following the death of King Frederick VII.
