Nigeriaanse oplichting

Nigeriaanse oplichting - ook wel 419-fraude (naar het betreffende artikel in het Nigeriaanse wetboek van strafrecht) of in het Engels Advanced fee fraud - heeft de naam te danken aan de oorsprong ervan, Nigeria. De kern van deze fraude ligt in het feit dat het slachtoffer gouden bergen worden beloofd als hij eerst (relatief) kleine onkosten wil voorschieten. De 'onkosten' truc wordt herhaald tot het slachtoffer afhaakt, waarna de oplichters spoorloos verdwijnen. De bendes zijn tegenwoordig strak georganiseerde hierarchisch geleide familiebedrijven, met grootvader (Chief) aan het hoofd. Met de komst van Internet zijn de oude communicatiemiddelen, fax en brief, nagenoeg geheel vervangen door massale email-spam. In toenemende mate worden ook andere methodes toegepast en wegen gevonden om contacten te leggen, zoals via Internet community-netwerksites en veilingsites. Ook wordt gebruik gemaakt van Instant Messaging, zoals bijvoorbeeld MSN Messenger, Skype en Yahoo Messenger.

De eerste stap is het versturen van een stortvloed aan e-mail (spam) naar alle mogelijke adressen. Er wordt meestal gewerkt met een aantal standaardteksten en varianten daarop. De afzender beweert bijvoorbeeld een hoge overheidsfunctionaris te zijn, of een executeur-testamentair, een stervende rijkaard, of een loterij. Het betreft een som van vaak vele miljoenen euro's of dollars, waarbij de hulp wordt ingeroepen van de ontvanger bij een of andere transactie. Er wordt een beloning in het vooruitzicht gesteld en er wordt bij de ontvanger op aangedrongen zo snel mogelijk telefonisch contact op te nemen.

Hieronder ziet u voorbeelden van een dergelijke brief (die overigens niet altijd over Nigeria hoeft te gaan).

I am contacting you with the hope that you will be of great assistance to me, I currently have within my reach the sum of 24 million U.S dollars cash which I intend to use for investment purposes outside Nigeria. This money came as a result of a payback contract deal between my husband and a Russian firm in our country's multi-billion dollar Ajaokuta steel plant. The Russian partners returned my husbands share being the above sum after his death. Presently, the new civilian Government has intensified their probe into my husbands financial resources which has led to the freezing of all our accounts, local and foreign, the revoking of all our business licences and the arrest of my First son. In view of this I acted very fast to withdraw this money from one of our finance houses before it was closed down. I have deposited the money in a security company with the help of very loyal officials of my late husband. No record is known about this fund by the government because there is no documentation showing that we received such funds. Due to the current situation in the country and government attitude to my family, I cannot make use of this money within, thus I seek your help in transferring this funds out of the sub-African region. De oplichters zullen alles doen om eventueel wantrouwen weg te nemen met verzonnen excuses, en op vragen zullen ze altijd een antwoord klaar hebben. Er wordt een flinke beloning in het vooruitzicht gesteld, maar er moet dan wel wat worden betaald om diverse kosten te dekken. En wat is nu een paar duizend euro als je er honderdduizenden of miljoenen kan krijgen? Het slachtoffer betaalt, maar het geld komt maar niet. Dan blijken er nog wat extra onkosten te zijn, etcetera etcetera. Dreigt het slachtoffer af te haken, wordt met bedreiging en chantage gewerkt. Op deze wijze kunnen slachtoffers een paar duizend tot tienduizenden euro's lichter gemaakt worden.[1]

De bestrijding van deze fraude is in handen van de KLPD. De zaak is zeer gecompliceerd and de prioriteit ervan ligt niet hoog. Hoewel er af en toe een succes wordt geboekt, blijft het dweilen met de kraan open. [2][3]

Sommige ontvangers laten zich niet beetnemen, maar doen net alsof ze dat wel doen. Ze schrijven enthousiaste berichten terug, waarna er een uitgebreide correspondentie ontstaat. Beide beloven het geld spoedig over te maken, maar steeds blijkt er iets gebeurd te zijn waardoor men die belofte voorlopig niet kan nakomen. Naast het hiermee verspillen van hun tijd, wordt ook op verschillende manieren geprobeerd om de oplichter zelf op kosten te jagen, hetgeen af en toe lukt. Veel van deze hilarische briefwisselingen en gebeurtenissen zijn op het internet terug te vinden.[4][5][6][7][8]

In 2005 kreeg deze vorm van oplichting de Ig Nobelprijs voor Literatuur - 'Presented to the Internet entrepreneurs of Nigeria, for creating and then using e-mail to distribute a bold series of short stories, thus introducing millions of readers to a cast of rich characters — General Sani Abacha, Mrs. Mariam Sanni Abacha, Barrister Jon A Mbeki Esq., and others — each of whom requires just a small amount of expense money so as to obtain access to the great wealth to which they are entitled and which they would like to share with the kind person who assists them.'
