John Dewey (20. október 1859 – 1. júní 1952) var bandarískur heimspekingur, sálfræðingur og uppeldisfrömuður. Ásamt Charles Sanders Peirce og William James lagði hann grunninn að heimspekikenningu um gagnhyggju (pragmatisma). Hann var í fararbroddi í umbótahreyfingu sem kennd var við framstefnu (progressivism). Hann ritstýrði alfræðiriti um vísindi.
Dewey stundaði nám við Johns Hopkins-háskólann og lauk doktorsprófi árið 1884. Árið 1904 varð hann prófessor í heimspeki við Columbia háskólann.
Dewey stofnaði The New School for Social Research ásamt hagfræðingunum Thorstein Veblen og James Harvey Robinson og Charles Beard.
Dewey var formaður rannsóknarnefndar, sem sýknaði Trotsky árið 1937 af ákærum sem á hann voru bornar af Stalín.
Dewey reyndi í kenningum sínum að samþætta, gagnrýna og byggja ofan á lýðræðiskenningar Rousseaus og námskenningar Platóns. Hann taldi Rousseau leggja ofuráherslu á einstaklinginn og Platón leggja ofuráherslu á samfélagið sem einstaklingurinn byggi í.
