[edit] History
The line was opened by an private railway company Yokohama Railway (横浜鉄道 Yokohama Tetsudō?) in 1908, and soon in 1910 leased to the government. In 1917 the line was nationalized.
Taking advantages of the location close to the headquarter in Tokyo and with less busy traffic, the line was used for test beds of regaugement in 1917 and of electrification in 1925. The former was to the standard gauge of the entire of the government network, which was abandoned politically, and the latter for Tōkaidō Main Line.
Electrification (for practical purpose, not experimental) was made in two phase, 8 years apart. Earlier part was in 1932 between Higashi-Kanagawa and Haramachida (present Machida), and later part was Haramachida and Hachiōji in 1941.
Doubling track was gradual and slow, with the first section in 1967 between Kikuna and Shin -Yokohama, the last in 1988 at the section of Aihara - Hachiōji.
[edit] Operation and rolling stock
Although the name of the line has Yokohama, only 1/3 of the trains are going to Yokohama Station from the line. Rapid (快速 Kaisoku?) trains are operated every 30 minutes in day hours.
Presently 8-car formations of 205 series are used. The second car of Higashi-Kanagawa end is equipped 6 doors on each side. Through trains to Sagami Line are served by the same series, but 4-car unit.
