The capital Iqaluit (formerly "Frobisher Bay") on Baffin Island, in the east, was chosen by the 1995 capital plebiscite. Other major communities include the regional centres of Rankin Inlet and Cambridge Bay. Nunavut also includes Ellesmere Island to the north, as well as the eastern and southern portions of Victoria Island in the west. Nunavut is both the least populated and the largest of the provinces and territories of Canada. It has a population of only 29,474[3] spread over an area the size of Western Europe. If Nunavut were a sovereign nation, it would be the least densely populated in the world: nearby Greenland, for example, has almost the same area and twice the population.[4]
Nunavut means 'our land' in Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit. Its inhabitants are called Nunavummiut, singular Nunavummiuq.
Quttinirpaaq National Park (formerly Ellesmere Island National Park Reserve) is a Canadian national park. Located on the northeastern corner of Ellesmere Island in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, the most northerly extent of Canada, it is the most northerly park on Earth. In Inuktitut, Quttinirpaaq means "top of the world". The park was established in 1988, but remains in a reserve status while land claim issues are being resolved.

In November 2007 the Auditor General of Canada, Sheila Fraser, reported that the Nunavut Business Credit Corporations (NBCC) finances were so badly kept that she could not approve the 2005/06 financial statements. The NBCC, a Crown corporation, is intended to act as a credit organisation and lend money, up to $1 million, to businesses that are not able to obtain bank loans.
Fraser said that for the 2005/06 fiscal year the NBCC had made $18 million in loans without sufficient documentation. In one case the NBCC had paid $1 million to both a parent and subsiduary company in Rankin Inlet. Rankin Inlet North MLA, Tagak Curley blamed current Minister of Economic Development David Simailak for the situation but Peter Kilabuk was minister at the time. He also asked that clearer rules be given as to how two companies are related.
On 5 December the Government of Nunavut said that plans were unway to enact guidelines to ensure the GN would be able to monitor the NBCC more closely.
In 2004 the Auditor General had also stated that the NBCC was problematic.
In other news, nurses in Nunavut were in contract talks with the Government but were frustrated with the slowness. In November the presidents of the Teachers' Federations for the three northern territories met in Yellowknife to discuss the rising levels of violence in schools.
