Hamilton, Ontario is a port city on the western end of Lake Ontario in Southern Ontario, Canada. The city has a population of 504,559 according to the Canada 2006 Census. The metropolitan area of Hamilton has a population of 692,911, making it the third largest metropolitan area in all of Ontario, after Toronto (metropolitan area population: roughly 5 million), and Ottawa (metropolitan area population: roughly 1 million). The city is part of the Golden Horseshoe and the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor. The local economy revolve around steel and manufacturing sectors, but recent developments "shifted" the economy to health and sciences sector. The city is recently amalgamated with Dundas, Ancaster, and Stoney Creek as one bigger city in the year 2001.
Dundas, Ontario, Canada held a town charter between 1848 and 2001. Its nickname is the Valley Town and has a latitude and longitude of .
The population has been stable for decades at about twenty thousand, largely because it has not annexed rural land from the protected Dundas Valley Conservation Area. Now operated by the Hamilton Conservation Authority, the area links up directly and indirectly with the Bruce Trail. Other green spaces include the Dundas Driving Park, Veterans Park and Cootes Paradise.
Notable events are the Buskerfest in early June, while the Dundas Cactus Festival is held annually in August. [1]
- Many of the Niagara Escarpment parks in Hamilton include picturesque waterfalls that plummet over the cliffs. There's at least 80 waterfalls in the area— some of which are well known, particularly in local neighbourhoods. As recently as 1999, the city has also been nicknamed “The City of Waterfalls”.
Russell Stanley "Russ" Jackson, OC , B.Sc (born July 28, 1936 in Hamilton, Ontario)[1] is a former Canadian football quarterback.
After an amazing college career as a both a basketball and football player, Jackson graduated from McMaster University in 1958 with a B.Sc. in Mathematics. He turned down a Rhodes Scholarship to sign with the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League. Originally a defensive back, Jackson ended by quarterbacking the Rough Riders to three Grey Cup championship victories, the last one being in 1969.
Jackson was honoured many times during his CFL career. He won the Schenley award as the league's outstanding player in 1963, 1966 and 1969. He was also a four-time Schenley winner as the CFL's outstanding Canadian player ('59, '63, '66, '69). He was a 6-time Eastern Conference all-star quarterback ('62, '63, '66, '67, '68, '69) and the CFL all-star quarterback in 1966, 1968 and 1969.
Russ Jackson is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in Hamilton, Ontario. Many consider him one of the best Canadians to play in the CFL, while most consider him to be the best Canadian to play the quarterback position.
After retiring from football, he returned to teaching, he was a mathematics teacher from 1959-1961 and head of the department of math at Rideau High School in Ottawa 1961-1966. He later became a vice-principal and principal at secondary schools in Ottawa and Mississauga.
Russ is an Officer of the Order of Canada and was awarded an honorary doctor degree in law by McMaster University in 1989.
