Edmonton is the capital city of the Canadian province Alberta. It is the second largest city in Alberta. It is located in the center of the province around very fertile farmland. Its total population is 730,372 (2006). Edmonton is a northern city, at the same latitude as Manchester and Hamburg. Edmonton's area is more than that of Toronto, Chicago, and New York, therefore making it a city with one of the least population density in North America.
Edmonton is known for the West Edmonton Mall, a very large mall. The Edmonton Eskimos, the Edmonton Rush, and the Edmonton Oilers play in Edmonton. Edmonton's two newspapers are the Edmonton Journal and the Edmonton Sun. The Edmonton Transit System is the public transit system in Edmonton.
West Edmonton Mall (WEM), located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is the largest shopping mall in North America and fourth largest in the world.
West Edmonton Mall is located in a suburban part of the city, covers a gross area of 570,000 m² (5.3 million ft²) and cost C$1.2 billion to build. There are over 800 stores and services and parking for more than 20,000 vehicles. More than 23,000 people are employed at the property. The mall receives 22 million visits per year and over 60 000 shoppers daily. The mall is currently valued at $926 million.
West Edmonton Mall first opened its doors to the public on September 15, 1981. The mall has been expanded three times since its opening in 1981, with these additions completed in 1983 (Phase II), 1985 (Phase III) and 1999 (Phase IV). It was the largest indoor shopping centre in the world until 2004.
An expansion is evidently underway for an additional 150,000 ft² (14,000 m²) of retail space, a facility for sports, trade shows and conventions, a 12-story office building, and a 600-unit apartment building, along with more parking. A new roller coaster is also set to open in the summer of 2007.

Wayne Douglas Gretzky, OC (born 26 January 1961 in Brantford, Ontario) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who is currently part-owner and head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes.
Nicknamed "The Great One," Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the NHL calls Gretzky "the greatest player of all time."[1] He is generally regarded as the best player of his era and has been called "the greatest hockey player ever" by many sportswriters,[2][3][4] players,[5] and coaches. He set 40 regular-season records, 15 playoff records, 6 All-Star records, won four Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers, and won 9 MVP awards and 10 scoring titles. He is the only player ever to total over 200 points in a season (a feat that he accomplished four times in his career). In addition, he tallied over 100 points a season for 15 NHL seasons, 13 of them consecutively. He is the only player to have his number, 99, officially retired by the National Hockey League.
He retired from playing in 1999, becoming Executive Director for the Canadian national men's hockey team during the 2002 Winter Olympics. He also became part owner of the Phoenix Coyotes in 2000 and following the 2004-05 NHL lockout became their head coach.
