Madden NFL 2005 is a football video game. It features Ravens star linebacker Ray Lewis on the cover. Al Michaels and John Madden do the commentary. As of September 25, 2007, Madden NFL 2005 is the eighth best-selling video game in the United States with 5.9 million copies sold, according to the NPD Group.[2]

This game featured the introduction of the "Hit Stick" to unleash hard hits and possibly dislodge the ball. The game featured a continuation of the "Playmaker" control and a deeper franchise mode where the player's morale affects the on-field performance. It also features the Storyline Central which features all of the stories related to the player's favorite team. Also a Create-a-fan, the user is able to create a fan based on his or her favorite team.

- 1995 number one draft choice Ki-Jana Carter appears as a free agent but he has no photo.
- Rashaan Salaam appears as a free agent in the game.
- Running back James Stewart appears in the game as a free agent, Stewart was released by the Detroit Lions at press time.
- Punter Rodney Williams is a free agent in the game, and is the game's only African-American punter.
- Tory Woodbury was converted into a wide receiver for this game and is listed as a wide receiver on the free agents list, whereas in previous games he was listed as a reserve quarterback.
- Despite being a member of the Eagles in the 2004 season, Jeremiah Trotter is a free agent as Trotter would return to the Philadelphia Eagles prior to the 2004 season.
- Akili Smith appears as a free agent in the game.
- Offensive lineman Blake Brockermeyer appears as a free agent even though he retired after the 2004 season.
- Pro-Bowlers Gilbert Brown, Kenny Holmes, Jeremiah Trotter (mentioned above), Jason Gildon, and Mo Lewis appear as free agents as they were released by their respective teams at press time.
- Bill Schroeder appears as a free agent as he was cut by the Detroit Lions at press time.
- Lance Briggs who is a member of the Chicago Bears appears as ROLB #55 but you can change his name through player edit

- The Super Bowl win animation has been upgraded, now a win in the Super Bowl results in a confetti shower and the presentation of the Vince Lombardi trophy.
- The game has a playable demo of NFL Street featuring a match of the two Super Bowl teams of 2004, the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers.
- This was the last game to feature the EA Sports Bio concept, this feature was not available in future EA Sports titles.
- There are extended cameos by players Antwaan Randle El, Jerome Bettis, Hines Ward, Tedy Bruschi, Ray Lewis, Samari Rolle, Derrick Brooks, Jeff Wilkins, rowdy football fans, and cheerleaders.
- This game featured the intercom music and "halftime" music from the NBA Live series during the play selection screen.
- There is bonus footage from the Madden Bowl and the NFL Player's celebration in New York.
- This game features the NFL All-Defensive Team featuring players Derrick Brooks,Champ Bailey, Ty Law, Rodney Harrison, Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp, Jason Taylor, and Michael Strahan and is the only game with this feature.
- Taglines for the game were "Fear the D" and "Defense Wins Championships".
- Tony Bruno hosts his radio show during franchise mode and sometimes coaches and players such as Marvin Harrison, Derrick Burgess, Lamont Thompson, Akin Ayodele, Marcus Trufant and a player that was an outstanding performer will call in.
- Game Pro magazine compared the concept of the graphics to Adam Sandler's character on The Waterboy.
- Bill Parcells is not present in the game as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys because he has a contract with ESPN so he is referred to as "Dallas Coach".
- If you sign a free agent at the main menu rosters mode when you go into a season their stats will be at N/A for everything.
- The gameplay is very similar to NCAA Football 2005.
- Ray Lewis is the only defensive player (as of Madden NFL 09) to grace the cover of Madden.
- Woodrow Dantzler is listed as his nickname "Woody" in this game.
- Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is listed as Ben Roethlisbergr because of letter limit. T. J. Houshmandzadeh is also shortened to T.J. Houshmandz.
- This was the last in the series to be released for the Playstation and the first in the series released for the DS. It is also the first Madden game to debut on a 64-bit handheld.
- The most points you can score is 255 but when you score another point it counts to your total at the end of the game.
