Madden NFL 2002 is an American Football video game. It features former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper on the cover. Pat Summerall and John Madden are the commentators.

Daunte Culpepper, the quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings was the Cover Athlete for the NFL 2002 game. Culpepper is considered to be a victim of the Madden curse after leading his team to 5-11 just one year after appearing on the cover.
[edit] Upgrade from 2001
The new faces and uniforms on PlayStation 2 look crisper[citation needed]. It's considered the best football game graphically at that time[citation needed]. There are new added things like the Hurry-up offense (two minute drill), a Training Mode hosted by John Madden, Franchise expansion in Franchise Mode, new cheerleader cards and new game modes like tournament and custom league. Most important though, the gameplay was heavily worked on, such as one-handed catches, pass defense, etc[citation needed].

- Super Bowl XXXVI MVP Tom Brady is not listed in the roster versions for the PC, N64, PS, and PS2, but is listed in the roster for the Gamecube and Xbox versions, which were released in November instead of August. He also appears in a later roster update for the PC version.
- The players who appear on the main menu are Champ Bailey, Mike Anderson, James Stewart, Ricky Williams, Courtney Brown, Takeo Spikes, Jamal Lewis, Stephen Davis, Muhsin Muhammad, Marshall Faulk, Drew Bledsoe, Terrell Owens, Shannon Sharpe, Jeff Garcia, Abdul-Karim al-Jabbar, and Emmitt Smith.
- Neil Smith is listed as a free agent in the game.
- 1995 NFL Draft number one draft choice Ki-Jana Carter is a free agent in this game.
- Veterans Andre Rison, Andre Reed, and Yancey Thigpen are free agent wide receivers.
- NFL announcer Tony Siragusa appears as a free agent.
- In the N64 version Tony Siragusa is still listed with the Baltimore Ravens.
- The Houston Texans always begin season play after the player's first season in franchise mode.
- Steve Smith is not in the game but the player can create these players in his likeness.
- Tony Banks appears as the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. He was cut by the Cowboys in preseason and was, subsequently, picked up by the Washington Redskins.
- This is the last Madden to be released to the N64.
- The N64 version had an updated 16-bit version of Madden, complete with every team (including the Texans) and the rosters.
- There is a team that can be chosen in the Play Now option that is named "Team Ecko", with such player names as "Masta Ace"
