List of tallest buildings in Atlanta
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This list of tallest buildings in Atlanta ranks skyscrapers in the U.S. city of Atlanta, Georgia by height. The tallest building in Atlanta is the 55-story Bank of America Plaza, which rises 1,023 feet (312 m) and was completed in 1992.[1] It also stands as the tallest building in the state of Georgia and the 8th-tallest building in the United States. The second-tallest building in the city and the state is the SunTrust Plaza, which rises 871 feet (265 m).[2] Eighteen of the twenty tallest buildings in Georgia are located in Atlanta.[3]
The history of skyscrapers in Atlanta began with the 1892 completion of the Equitable Building, which is often regarded as the first skyscraper in the city.[4] Until it was demolished in 1971, the building stood at a height of eight floors.[4][5] Atlanta went through a large building boom that lasted from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, during which time the city saw the completion of 11 of its 30 tallest buildings, including the Bank of America Plaza, SunTrust Plaza, One Atlantic Center and 191 Peachtree Tower. The city is the site of 13 completed buildings that stand at least 500 feet (152 m) in height, with two more under construction. Overall, the skyline of Atlanta is ranked (based on existing and under-construction buildings over 500 feet (152 m) tall) second in the Southeast (after Miami), fourth in the Southern United States (after Miami, Houston and Dallas), and seventh in the United States.[A] As of May 2008, there are 214 completed high-rises in the city.[6]
Atlanta entered into another high-rise construction boom in 2004, and has since seen the completion of seven buildings rising over 400 feet (122 m) in height. Eight more are under construction in the city, including 3344 Peachtree; with a height of 665 feet (203 m), this building is the tallest structure under construction in Atlanta.[7] 3344 Peachtree was topped out in October 2007 and is expected to be complete by early 2008. There are also 23 skyscrapers with expected heights of at least 400 feet (122 m) approved or proposed in the city. As of May 2008, there are a total of 80 high-rise buildings under construction, approved for construction, and proposed for construction in Atlanta.[6]
