Template:Link FA is permanently protected from editing, as it is a heavily used or visible template.

Substantial changes should be proposed here, and made by administrators if the proposal is uncontroversial, or has been discussed and is supported by consensus. Use {{editprotected}} to attract the attention of an administrator in such cases.
Any contributor may edit the template's documentation to add usage notes, categories or interwiki links.

This template was considered for deletion on 2006 May 17. The result of the discussion was keep.

Wouldn't the JavaScript at MediaWiki:Monobook.js be better placed in users' own monobook.js subpages rather than default one? I'm not sure this is a useful enough feature for the majority of readers to give them extra javascript and images on every page load. Since so few languages have a featured article process, and those that do all have differing standards of what a featured article is, I feel this is only useful to a few people who understand the different processes on those Wikipedias and want to be involved with projects like the Echo one you mentioned. For most people, this is just extra JavaScript for no benefit. Angela . 14:08, September 11, 2005 (UTC)

Well that was pretty much my view. I can only read English, but when another language has a featured article I often find the article useful as well... but since English is by far the largest, in most other cases the articles in other languages are not useful. As a reader, the star lets me know that it might be worth my time to look. As an editor, it's a conspicuous reminder that I can potentially use those pages as a resource. There are actually quite a few pages on English which lack even a picture yet the article is featured on DE and is fully illustrated. There are many cases where there is a lot of potential for shared work between languages, but often it is clear that the editors have not even looked at the other languages.

As far as impact, the js is implemented as a single file, and the same image is used all the time. The javascript only must be transfered to the browser once per session (and is quite small), and does not execute until the page is fully rendered (and could be disabled by the users monobook.js if they disliked it). The image will also only be loaded once, and only if a user hits an article with a star. There is actually no change in the text transmitted by the server for each article loaded. I estimate that if all the stars were added we will only have about 1000 articles with such stars in total. I would prefer javascript not be used long term, as this could be implemented with a zero overhead mediawiki feature instead, but I think it would be better to fully establish the usefulness and nature of operation before we add feature to mediawiki directly. --Gmaxwell 03:59, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

Another datapoint on the usefullness here. I added links for all 450 some featured articles in DE that had articles in EN, and I'm seeing quite a few of them get images and content merged already. --Gmaxwell 09:45, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

There is no doubt this is a nice, simple little tool that will help editors. Maybe in a ideal world there would be a flag in preferences - something like "switch on editor tools CSS/JS" that would import an extra CSS and JS file containing these little tweaks. (The CSS and JS would be editable to the extent that they are now). Without that, I think its utility still outweighs the cost and we should keep it in the general .JS files. Well FAs are intended to be the best wikipedia has to offer, and I think a lot of people would say that the best means that the article doesn't include self-reference of any form. So a symbol inside the article would not be good. I agree with this view. However, it would also be possible to add a small symbol like the current star on the featured interlanguage links, outside of the article view (perhaps up with the tabs, such that it won't show up on printing and doesn't look like part of the article). I think such a feature would be a good idea, and I will work out the implimentation and propose it at a later date if people continue to feel comfortable with the highlighted interlanguage links. --Gmaxwell 04:04, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

I have been using something link that. If I am linking to the article from my user page or from project pages, I use {{FA}}, which puts a star next to it. I only suggest we do that in non-article spaces. Zach (Sound Off) 04:08, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

Well, if an article is unfeatured it takes a little more work to ensure that it's not dewikilinked, but more importantly this needs to be as simple as possible because ideally it will be worked on by people from other languages. French and italian currenlty do this exactly the same way we have it right now. There is also some risk for confusing interlanguage link bots by removing the obvious interlanguage links. Right now the magic javascript is only in monobook. It could be easily added to other themes by any admin that wants to be bold. I would suggest not putting it in classic or simple since users of less fluffy themes may not be so interested in getting javascript crammed down their throat. Cologne Blue specifies class='external' for each interlanguage link, so I would think it does not work for that skin. See also m:Help:User_style#Wikitext-controlled_CSS.--Patrick 22:13, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

I modified the existing code so that skins with standard-skin-like interwiki links are also able to show the stars. The new code can be found on de:MediaWiki:Common.js and should work on enWP, too. I put it on en for two reasons, one because the png on FR has a transparent blueish background, which looks fine on en with firefox, but with IE (that doesn't do png alpha) it's broken. Also because editors here might want to control and customize the image.. I'm having problems trying to copy this template to the Portuguese Wikipedia. I copied everything right, created the template (Predefinição:Interwiki destacado) and added that piece of code to MediaWiki:Monobook.js, but it is still not working, because I added the template to Bandeira da Índia (Flag of India, which has been recently featured here on the English Wikipedia) article and nothing happened... can someone help? --Ikescs 04:21, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

YurikBot is not removing them - the bot treats Link FA templates as page elements and moves them above the interwiki links. Functionality remains the same. LinkFa has been introduced recently, and we haven't had a chance to update bot framework to handle them differently. All featured articles and future feature articles at the Vietnamese Wikipedia have been marked with the Sao chọn lọc template, which adds a little star icon in the "namespace icon area" (various namespaces at vi: display icons at the top-right corner of the page). This can be accomplished thusly:

Assuming that the Link FA code has already been added to MediaWiki:Monobook.js, the following code should be added to the script, just below the Link FA code:

This little logo isn't as intrusive as the meta-template that used to appear at the top of featured articles, but it still makes it easy to figure out if the article is of high quality, without having to load the Talk page.

If you are concerned about any potential impact on page loading time, just exclude or comment out the section marked "optional" in the JavaScript code above. If you enough people find this tip useful, I'll move it to a more widely read Talk page like Wikipedia talk:Featured articles.

It would be a just a little bit visually neater if the star replaced the square blue list bullet, instead of appearing to the right of it, allowing the column of interwiki links to retain their perfect left-alignment. It would also avoid the interwiki link jumping to the right, at the end of the page load. Is this possible? Easily?—Michael Z. 2005-10-21 18:03 Z

Yes, that's actually what we do at the Vietnamese Wikipedia. So in MediaWiki:Monobook.js, just replace the following two lines:

b.style.backgroundRepeat = "no-repeat";

With this line:

I like the idea, but when I looked at vi wiki I didn't like how it looked, the alignment needs to be fixed, I think solving that in a cross browser compatible way may be difficult without using images for all the bullets. Is there a CSS attribute to change the color of the bullets? If we could make the otherwise normal bullets for the featured articles gold that might be nice instead of the image. --Gmaxwell 17:20, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

The blue bullet is already an image (bullet.gif), so changing colour is easy: just swap in an identical graphic with different colour. Positioning a star to align nicely with the blue bullets shouldn't be too difficult either, if it's done by editing a graphic rather than messing around too much with CSS positioning. When I have some time this weekend, I'll build some experiments to see what I can accomplish.

Anyway, even with its minor flaws, I think the offset star at vi: looks better than our existing double bullet, no? I think the best solution would be a smaller star, in a solid gold colour instead of shaded, and centred exactly where the blue bullet would be. Any thoughts?

Regarding MSIE compatibility: we should be able to do this using list-style instead of a fancy CSS3 pseudo-class. But if there are technical limitations, we could make it look great in modern browsers, and have a fallback rule to make it look just okay in Explorer. The star doesn't seem to show up any more (at least for me). For example, Easter Island has {{Link FA|de}} but no star shows up near "Deutsch" in the "in other languages" box. Same for Alves dos Reis and Português. I'm using the default monobook style which, according to this discussion page, should work. Wouldn't it make more sense to place it right beside the interwikilink? Featured articles in other languages mean mostly a long source of the English article too - why even extending the source? In the end we have we will have 70 lines more (interwiki + featured) instead of 40 (interwiki). I'm having problems trying to copy and adapt this template at the Volapük Wikipedia. I copied everything right, created the template (Samafomot:Yüm YG) and added that piece of code to MediaWiki:Monobook.js, but it is still not working. I added the template (for German, Icelandic and Croatian) to the page: filosop, and nothing seems to change... Does anyone know if I did something wrong? Smeira 04:21, 2007 yulul 10

Fisrt please "debug" your site a little: in Firefox open Tools → Javascript Console, in Opera open Tools → Advanced → Error Console. You'll see "addLoadEvent is not defined" error
Even after you fix that, LinkFA() is not going to work because you did not copy it from Mediawiki:Common.js. You took it from somewhere else (e.g. I know ru.wp uses that version) and that code is designed for different {{Link FA}} template, which uses CSS class, not id ∴ Alex Smotrov 02:26, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

It's doesn't make sense that the JavaScript part is in Common.js while CSS is only in Monobook.css (see Template:Link FA#How does it work?). We can easily make the template work in 3 other (as far as I remember) Monobook-like skins by moving CSS into Common.css. Or make it Monobook-only proper way.
