I've made some announcements ([1][2][3][4][5][6]) and I'm sure there will be folks who have something to say, so I'm starting this topic here. Sorry that I haven't been around much to discover the situation earlier. I'm afraid I still don't have much time to devote to Wikipedia editing, so I won't be able to be a big help, but the state of History of the Soviet Union is just unacceptable, and I hope it won't be too much work to reassemble a good summary article with material from the detailed articles.

Yes, I saw Walker's article. He had contacted me at home about who Wikipedia and thought I was an administrator. I gave him some instruction for about an hour and said if he wanted an insiders account to speak to you or one of the other Winnipeg administrators. Don't know if he actually did get a hold of you. [edit] Your changes in AFV list by country
If that is a list by origin many countries won't have any AFVs there at all! And if you're so determinated to do so (and ruin what I've been working on for mouths) then why you only removed the Archer from list of Polish vehicles? More or less than 70% of the vehicles there are not of Polish origin.
Please respond or leave my work alone. I think we should talk about this before you make any kind of dramatic changes to said article.
BTW this isn't meant to be offensive. It's just that the part of article your about to dramatically change (at least I suspect you of that) is one I spent most of my time editing Wikipedia on. Also I was sending polite "diplomatic" messages to other people and they usually didn't respond and I worked too hard on that article to just give it up that easily.

Hi, just a quick one on the Airtrooper rank, I was an Airtrooper in the British Army for 4 years, a members of the AAC for 15 years and retired this year from the British Army after 22 years. Happy Days :)
The abbreviation for Airtrooper is "Atpr" I explained this in the minor edit text. The fact that Airtrooper is actually one word, to have a capital "A" and "T" doesn't make sence. I hope this amemdment could be changed.
While I am on the subject, I appreciate the change to the link to my user account (the rules); but I wish to publish my work on the rank of Airtrooper as a main subject and not in my user area. How do I do this. That said it is still a work in progress :)

Thanks for looking over my work and making it more presentable (I am learning quickly); I am looking further into the history of the 'Air' part of Airtrooper. It is very much based on the Parachute Regiment, Glider Pilot Regiment and the SAS. It is all very interesting. :) More to come!

The reason I put the scrolling bar and small print reference list in was to standardize with what the Calgary page is doing. Is that not correct? I am seeing more article pages using the scrolling bar once the notes reach 30 or so in number.

- Thanks. I actually managed to do it without spending too much time, and the seeing the search results satisfied my own curiosity.
- I just felt I had to address the continued presentation of obvious mistruth. I don't know who it actually aims to convince, but the overwhelming volume could fool another editor who actually assumes good faith and doesn't take the time to examine so many false claims.

Hello, I was told that you would know the answer to this question. The article Hryhory Loboda is spelled differently in the article itself (Hryhoriy), and in the Hetmans template. Because if this, his name appears as a red link in the template. I know Григорій can be transliterated in many different ways, and I am not sure which transliteration would be prefered. I want to emphasize that I was not threatening to fight or unnecessarily edit. I was stating that for the sake connivance (since there is an obvious demand for it) and for maintaining less revisions on Wikipedia, it should be added. Please to not harass/blame users. - I can appreciate your honesty that you do not agree. I agree that leaving a paragraph in the disambiguation was neither a solution nor the best idea. However, I want to point out that there are two parties in this dispute: Those 'adding' and those 'removing'.
The pool of those removing is much small and is basically a set group of people that have members joining slowly. They are devoted to the cause that HP douse not mean nor imply Harry Potter. Some may argue that is because these 'removers' are not a fan/don't like/never read Harry Potter. This assumption is basically irrelevant although it may play a role in the motive of removing.
The pool of those who are adding are an entirely random group of people that contains an infinite number of members. Users join this group when they search for HP expecting to find a reference to link to their topic they are looking for, in this case Harry Potter. This may because the user truly refers to Harry Potter as HP, is lazy and thinks it will be in the obvious, or is clueless how to spell Harry Potter and expects it in the obvious. In any case people are expecting Harry Potter to be in this so-called obvious location. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to stop the 'adders', as it is an entirely random group of visitors that notice Harry Potter is not on this seemingly obvious page.
The 'adders' will not be aware of the so-called consensus that the 'adders' should not add Harry Potter. Since there are numerous adds for Harry Potter, and it keeps on repeating, I want to argue that we should add it as a general public consensus that HP could stand for Harry Potter, despite the fact that it is "incited". It is an assumed abbreviation. It will be easier to control/notify the experienced Wikipedia editors that it is alright that Harry Potter is there, than notify the average person not to add Harry Potter.
I believe I understand you logic for not having Harry Potter on disambiguation, I hope you understand my logic of why I believe it should be there. If I myself had not run into this page expecting Harry Potter to be on this page, I would definitely be on the other side of the table. I hope the next question is whether the Harry Potter link will go the book series, or to the character.

Sorry about the GOST 16876-71 mix-up. I had been looking at a revised list and assumed there had been a typo in the article. This probably should also be fixed in the Romanization of Russian article. I'll refrain from doing so as there might be some reason I am unaware of for having it differently, although certainly can lead to confusion as it stands.
As for the prime vs. modifer letter prime, it's a sticky situation. Unicode recommends U+02B9 for linguistic usage, and for Cyrillic transliteration in particular, and the specifications for spacing and line-breaking certainly favor the use U+02B9 over U+2032 in that regard. Certainly U+2032 is more supported by fonts (U+2032 vs. U+02B9), but should we sacrifice accuracy for accommodation? I'm not a Windows user either (GNU/Linux here), and don't have ready access to a Windows machine, but I'll check the character support the next time I have a chance. I'd personally prefer to use the more precise U+02B9, but I can understand wanting to accommodate a possible majority of users.
On a side note, the publication for the BGN/PCGN system uses U+2032.
In any case, there should be some consistency among the various transliteration articles. Currently there seems to be a mix of U+2032, U+02B9, and even U+0027 (apostrophe).

Hi, reading the archives, I was able to deduce that you seem to be the author primarily responsible for our current IPA font selection ideas. There is currently a discussion on MediaWiki_talk:Common.css#.IPA class that deals with a problem with IPA font selection, and I think we could use some help from you. The primary issues are:
- Inconsistent font selection due to glyph substitution fallback
- The code is present in both our CSS and our JS
- IE7 ignores the current CSS (though I think it should catch the JS)

I removed the capital Ot ligature from the table - all the other entries are lower-case letters - this one is out of place. See Ot (Cyrillic). If it is not the Ot ligature, then it is a capital omega with one of the diacritics, and it is still out of place in this table. There are no other vowels in the table that are shown in their capital form, with diacritics. See also Omega (Cyrillic). Note: just because something is published in the Unicode standard does not mean it is correct. If the character you restored to the table is incorrectly described in the unicode standard, we are not obligated to perpetuate the error. Please remove the letter from the table, as well as the erroneous footnote that purports to explain it. You don't have any printed examples using this character as a lower-case letter, do you? - Thanks for your quick and insightful reply. You are right in pointing out that the character is omega with a breathing mark, not the Ot ligature. I don't think you have to worry about other editors beating you to the punch - I suggested removing the character from this table over a year ago (see the talk page). Do you have access to printed resources that discuss the system of accents and the script reforms? The article Omega (Cyrillic) needs a better link to ustav - an article that apparently does not yet exist. The present link goes to Uncial script, which mentions the Slavonic alphabet only in passing (Uncial script#National styles|National styles). Ot (Cyrillic) says that the Ot ligature was used to spell отъ, but this is not the only usage. Psilon pneuma redirects to Spiritus lenis, and refers only to the Greek variants of this particular diacritic, but as the illustration of the "capital ornate Omega" shows, it has a different shape in the early Slavic alphabet (quarter circle opening down). I think we could use an article on poluustav, which I'm guessing is Peter the Great's 1707 innovation, which is referred to in Spiritus lenis. I would be happy to write all this stuff, but if you have references to point to, you would be the better editor for the job. Please let me know if you need any help. - Yeah, I don't know about RT specifically (but see Russia Today TV#Criticism), but the Russian press is the 144th most free in the world. Facts based on only a single citation in the Russian press send up a red flag (no pun)—I would say that any generalization in an article which has to resort to that for backing is dubious by default, even without reading what it says.
- If you have access to Yekelchyk's book, do look it over. It objectively discusses the way the Krawchuk, Kuchma, Yushchenko, and Yanukovych factions have made use of nationality and language (as well as in the Soviet 1920–30s and 1960–80s). - That's the one. If you want a full survey from the earliest times, read Magocsi 1996, who gives a bit more coverage of other peoples on the territory of Ukraine, or Subtelny 1988. Yekelchyk glosses over the early history and goes into detail from the 1800s, but his focus is on what allowed the modern national state to spring up, and he covers post-Soviet and post-Orange events better than the older books. Wow, that was a long time ago. Yes, it looks like the major things I was looking at have been converted to IPA, but there are still a few non-IPA-looking things at Old Church Slavonic#Eastern_Bulgarian_recension, Old Church Slavonic#Croatian_recension, Old Church Slavonic#Russian_recension, and Old Church Slavonic#Serbian_recension, like the vowels with ogoneks and haceks. I'm by no means a Slavicist, though - I guess those probably represent reconstructed proto-sounds that don't have a definite IPA mapping? In that case they wouldn't need converting. The same notation is sometimes used for pronunciation, but then it shouldn't be in brackets like IPA: [ǫ] and [ę]. According to article Sabra (tank) and its external links, Sabra is also a fundamental rebuild (of M60, superior to T-55) with some structural changes. The main guns, fire control systems, power packs, tracks, add-on armour, ERA, engine/transmission, and some of the subsystems were modernized by using new systems. - Oops, that doesn't sound right, does it? I removed the link for several reasons:

- It's not encyclopedic. It is a tool rather than a reference.
- It's one of many transliteration programs (online, Mac, Windows, etc), including free ones. This ad-driven service probably wouldn't be the first choice if we were to link to one.
- The choices of only "universal", Gost, and ISO 9 transliterations for Russian isn't very useful (I hadn't seen the pop-up, so I thought it only use the proprietary "universal"). There is only one Ukrainian transliteration, not corresponding to any common scheme (щ = shh, ь = ").
- The transliterator has some good features, but it is odd and feels inconvenient to me. It captures all keystrokes, including command keys, text navigation, etc.
I notice your edits are mainly adding such links. Do you have any personal or professional connection with translit.cc?

I don't know requests are received, but I will ask anyways. It seems that not many people are interested in reviewign the article Verdeja, due to a lack of knowledge on the tank itself and on tanks, in general. The issue with the former is that not many people are bound to know about the Verdeja, especially in such detail (the main source I used is a rare book, at that - it cost me around €40, which is a good price for it!), and so if that is a main consideration I'm afraid that it will never be reviewed! As one of the most knowledgeable members on armored fighting vehicles, that I have come across, I wanted to ask if you were interested in giving it a good article review?
