KZPS (92.5 FM) is a radio station serving the Dallas/Fort Worth market in Texas. The station is owned and operated by Clear Channel Communications and airs a Texas-themed classic rock format. The station is known as "Lone Star 92.5." The format debuted April 23, 2007. The call letters date back to 1986. In April 2008, KZPS changed back to classic rock, keeping the "Lonestar 92.5" branding.

The station's current format also involves the dropping of conventional 30-second and 60-second ads in favor of sponsored hours with disk jockeys promoting sponsors conversationally. The previous classic rock format was heard on 92.5 HD-2 (HD Radio). 92.5 HD-2 recently switched to an AAA format branded as "The Summit".

[edit] History

The frequency debuted in 1948 with the KRLD call sign. The station initially simulcast with Dallas station KRLD-AM. The station was one of only three 24-hour FM stations in the Dallas market in the 1960s. A progressive rock format was instituted in the early 1970s.

The call letters changed to KAFM in 1972, and the station underwent a number of format changes through the 1970s and 1980s, including top 40, classic hits and jazz before settling on a long-standing classic rock format.

A number of different owners have owned the station, beginning with Metromedia and Times Herald Printing. Clear Channel bought the station from Evergreen Media, which had acquired it from Bonneville International in 1997.

Notable disk jockeys from the many who have worked at the station include Sam "Bo" Roberts and "Long" Jim White ("Bo and Jim") and Jon Dillon: all of whom are still currently working at KZPS; "Stubie" Doak (nights); Pamela Steele (middays); Benn McGregor ("McGregor" - 1982-86 writer/producer, co-host Morning Drive w/ Andy Barber 1984-85); Jerry Vigil (middays, prduction director); Pete Thomson (afternoons); John Shomby (program director); Paul Donovan (evenings).
