[edit] Democratic primary
On the Democratic side, Indianapolis businessman Jim Schellinger and former U.S. Rep. Jill Long Thompson had announced their candidacies. Schellinger, with support of key Democratic officials such as former Indiana House Speaker John Gregg, former Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson and the late U.S. Rep. Julia Carson[1], had raised over $1 million in campaign funds. Long Thompson's support came from Democrats such as popular former U.S. Rep. Andrew Jacobs, Jr. and former Indiana First Lady Maggie Kernan[2].
A poll in April 2008 showed Thompson slightly leading Schellinger 48% to 42%.[3]
A Democratic win in November 2008 would generate Indiana's 50th Governor.

[edit] Republican nomination
The current Governor of Indiana, Mitch Daniels, defeated the incumbent Democratic governor Joseph Kernan in 2004, becoming the first Republican governor in Indiana in 16 years. On June 16, 2007, Daniels announced he was running for re-election with his Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman. Daniels will compete against Jill Long Thompson in the general election in November. If Daniels wins re-election, he will remain Indiana's 49th Governor.
[edit] Libertarian race
Andy Horning an Engineer, Libertarian Party Activist & Frequent Candidate is the only Libertarian running so he will appear on the November ballot.
[edit] Polling
Polling had shown that largely Mitch Daniels had repeatedly lead against both Jill Long Thompson and Jim Schellinger. Long Thompson, the Democratic Party of Indiana's gubernatorial candidate, recently has been able to compete strongly against Daniels in most proposed polls.
