An election for United States Senator from Maine will be held on November 4, 2008, to determine the Senator representing Maine beginning in the 111th United States Congress.
Incumbent Republican Susan Collins has indicated that she will seek re-election. According to Senator John Ensign of Nevada, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Maine is one of the top ten most competitive Senate races, the others being Alaska, Colorado, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon and Virginia.[1]

[edit] Candidates
On the Republican side, Collins is likely to be renominated with no opposition in the primary. Collins had promised not to seek election to a third term during her two previous campaigns, and this may become an issue.[citation needed] Senator Collins has received an endorsement from Independent Democrat Senator Joe Lieberman.[citation needed]
U.S. Representative Tom Allen of Maine's 1st congressional district is the Democratic nominee, defeating Thomas Ledue. Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright campaigned for Allen during his primary fight.[citation needed]
Laurie Dobson is also running as an independent.[citation needed]
[edit] Competitiveness
Political observers believe the race will become competitive; Stuart Rothenberg of the Rothenberg Political Report listed Collins and Republican Senator Wayne Allard of Colorado as the only vulnerable incumbents in the 2008 Senate election, until he changed the race to "Likely Republican". The Cook Political Report, UpFront Politics, and CQPolitics all list the race as "leans Republican".
