Hugo O'Neill

Hugo O'Neill (Lisbon, June 7, 1874 – Lisbon, March 30, 1940), a Navy Officer, was the head of the Clanaboy O'Neill dynasty, whose family has been in Portugal since the 18th century. He was officially recognized by the offices of arms throughout Europe as titular Prince and Count of Clanaboy, but he refused to use this title, using instead the style O'Neill of Clannaboy. He was the first son of the previous head Jorge O'Neill and wife Maria Isabel Mazziotti Fernandes.

Married in Lisbon, January 14, 1906 to Dona Júlia Margarida Catarina de Serpa Pimentel de Sousa Coutinho (Lisbon, September 27, 1881 – Lisbon, February 28, 1934), daughter of Dom Fernando de Serpa Leitão de Mansilha Pimentel, a decorated officer, of the Marquesses (formerly Counts and Viscounts) de Gouveia and Barons de São João de Areias, and wife Dona Maria Ana Vitória de Sousa Coutinho, daughter of the 3rd Count de Linhares, of the Marquesses (formerly Counts) do Funchal and Marquesses (formerly Viscounts) de Maceió in Brasil, and of the Counts de Redondo (formerly Counts de Borba) and Lords de Gouveia (a granddaughter of the 1st Duke de Loulé and a great-granddaughter of King Dom João VI of Portugal), the couple had four children:

Maria Ana do Carmo O'Neill (Cascais, July 30, 1907 – deceased), married in Lisbon, Encarnação, January 3, 1929 to her brother in law Dom João José de Melo (Cascais, September 9, 1904 – deceased), son of Dom António Vasco de Melo da Silva César de Menezes, 10th Count de Sabugosa and 12th Count de São Lourenço and Representative of the Title of Marquess de Sabugosa, and wife Berta Munró dos Anjos, of Scottish ancestry on her mother's side (below), the couple had three children

Maria Isabel de Jesus O'Neill (Lisbon, May 27, 1910 – deceased), married in Lisbon, April 11, 1929 to her brother in law Dom António Vasco José de Melo da Silva César de Menezes, 4th Marquess and 11th Count de Sabugosa and 13th Count de São Lourenço (Cascais, September 28, 1903 – deceased), son of Dom António Vasco de Melo da Silva César de Menezes, 10th Count de Sabugosa and 12th Count de São Lourenço and Representative of the Title of Marquess de Sabugosa, and wife Berta Munró dos Anjos, of Scottish ancestry on her mother's side (above), the couple had five children
Fernando Hugo Maria O'Neill (Lisbon, October 13, 1914 – Setúbal, 1974), married in Lisbon, October 6, 1947 to Maria Lívia de Sá Pais do Amaral Franco (March 19, 1923 –), daughter of Frederico Gaspar Schindler Franco Castelo-Branco (son of João Franco Ferreira Pinto Castelo-Branco), of Swiss German and Swiss Italian ancestry on his mother's side, and wife Maria Rita de Sá Pais do Amaral, daughter of the 5th Count (formerly Viscounts) de Anadia and 13th Lord of the Manor de Mangualde, of the Viscounts de Alverca and Counts (formerly Viscounts) de Alferrarede, the couple has four children:
- Rita Maria Franco O'Neill (Lisbon, Encarnação, January 9, 1950 – Madrid, October 9, 1977), married to Dom Sebastião Maria de Sá Coutinho de Lancastre (Lisbon, June 13, 1945 –), son of Dom Sebastião de Oliveira e Almeida Calheiros de Lancastre, of the Counts da Guarda and of the Counts (formerly Lords) das Alcáçovas and Counts de Cuba, and also of the Marquesses (formerly Counts) de Castelo Melhor and Counts da Calheta, and wife Maria Angelina de Sá Coutinho Rebelo Sotomaior, daughter of the 3rd Count (formerly Viscounts and Lords of the Majorat) da Aurora, without issue
- João Hugo Maria Franco O'Neill (April 2, 1951 –), married to Maria da Graça de Castelo-Branco Schedel (Lisbon, August 15, 1952 –), daughter of João Ferrão de Castelo-Branco Schedel, born to a German father, and wife Dona Maria Isabel da Visitação de Siqueira de Castelo-Branco, of the Marquesses (formerly Lords of the Majorat) de Belas, Counts (formerly Lords of the Majorat) de Pombeiro and Viscounts (formerly Lords of the Majorat) de Castelo-Branco, and of the Counts da Figueira, and also of the Marquesses (formerly Counts) de Castelo Melhor and Counts da Calheta, the couple had two children:
  - Vera Schedel O'Neill (Lisbon, March 21, 1976 –), married in Lisbon, December 13, 1997 to Manuel de Atouguia Belford Correia da Silva (Angola, July 16, 1973 –), son of Pedro de Barros Belford Correia da Silva, of the Counts (formerly Viscounts) de Paço de Arcos, of remote English ancestry, and first wife (as first husband) Margarida Maria de Castro de Atouguia, of the Viscounts de Atouguia, of an enobled bourgeois family, the couple had one son
  - Duarte Schedel O'Neill, presumptive heir to his cousin Jorge Empis O'Neill in case of him dying without any legitimate issue; he is also the last male of the O'Neill in Portugal
- Maria Ana Franco O'Neill (Lisbon, Encarnação, June 26, 1952 –), married in Lisbon, Prazeres, October 26, 1973 as his first wife to Manuel José de Gouveia Portela de Herédia (Lisbon, Campo Grande, July 3, 1948 –), a Lawyer, Licenced in Law by the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, a Lawyer, son of José de Freitas Branco de Herédia, of the Viscounts da Ribeira Brava, and wife Maria do Carmo de Gouveia Portela, the couple had three children
