Europa Universalis III (EUIII) is a grand strategy computer game by Paradox Interactive. The game and its expansion were later ported to Mac OS X by Virtual Programming.

The original game (without expansions) starts in 1453, right after the Fall of Constantinople, and continues to 1793, just past the beginning of the French Revolution. The player controls a nation and handles matters concerning war, diplomacy, trade, and the economy.

EUIII has a 3D engine which requires the system to meet the Pixel Shader 2.0 specification. The map has 1,700 land and sea provinces encompassing most of the world, with 250 playable historical nations. The game also uses elements of other Paradox games such as Crusader Kings, Victoria, and Hearts of Iron II.

[edit] Main Features

  • The first date the original game (without any expansions) could start was May 30, 1453 (the day after the fall of Constantinople; deliberately chosen to eliminate the Byzantine Empire from the game) and the last date was July 14, 1789 (the storming of the Bastille, which was the beginning of the French Revolution). The game would then end no later than January 1, 1793 (that is to say, that December 31, 1792 was the last playable day and the next day, the player would simply receive a note saying the game had ended). With the Napoleon's Ambition expansion, the start date remained the same, but the end date was moved back almost 30 years, making January 2, 1821 the last possible start date and January 1, 1822 the end date. When the In Nomine expansion was released, the dates were once again altered. The first possible start date was set to October 14, 1399 (the day after the coronation of Henry IV of England). Whereas the last possible start date was moved back one month (making February 2, 1821 the last possible date), that date also became the last playable one, since the game then ends on February 3, 1821. Within this time frame (1399-1821), the player can choose to start on any desirable date (except February 29, since the game does not include leap years) of the Julian Calendar. However, with the In Nomine expansion, the players can easily change the time frame themselves, making the game start as early as January 1 AD 1 (years BC are not possible) and end whenever they wish in the future.

[edit] Expansion Packs

On May 3, 2007, an expansion named Napoleon's Ambition was announced by Paradox. It was officially released on August 22, 2007, on GamersGate. The Windows version of the expansion is available only as a download from GamersGate, and aims to expand on EUIII, with an improved interface, enhanced trade system, expanded options, and greater content to cover the extended time period.[1]

On March 5, 2008, a second expansion titled In Nomine was announced. It was officially released on 28 May that same year[2]. Highlighted features include a further extension of the game's time frame, the addition of the Byzantine Empire, a revised AI which focuses on strategic toplevel goals, and completely reworked rebellions with their own goals and abilities.
