[edit] Welcome

Hello Awbeal, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on Talk page. Again, welcome! [edit] License tagging for Image:Georgewhite.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Georgewhite.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 21:07, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikiproject North Carolina

Thanks for joining the project and welcome. Feel free to jump right in.  :-) If you have a chance, please give North Carolina a vote on the USCOTW board. [edit] Calvin Jones (NC physician)

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Calvin Jones (NC physician), but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. This article appears to be a direct copy from http://www.wfu.edu/history/HST_WFU/jones.htm. As a copyright violation, Calvin Jones (NC physician) appears to qualify for speedy deletion under the speedy deletion criteria. Calvin Jones (NC physician) has been tagged for deletion, and may have been deleted by the time you see this message. If the source is a credible one, please consider rewriting the content and citing the source.

If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GFDL, you can comment to that effect on Talk:Calvin Jones (NC physician). If the article has already been deleted, but you have a proper release, you can reenter the content at Calvin Jones (NC physician), after describing the release on the talk page. However, you may want to consider rewriting the content in your own words. Thank you, and please feel free to continue contributing to Wikipedia. Calton | Talk 01:08, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] moving article

Hi Awbeal, When you want to move the content of an article to a new location, please use the move button at the top of the page. The contribution history of an article has to be maintained to comply with the GFDL and its a lot easier to move a page than merge page histories, which is what I did with Operation Together Forward and Operation Forward Together. When you have non-trivial moves, you can ask at WP:RM. Thanks, BanyanTree 04:26, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for delay Ive been away. It was a copyright violation. I deleted it temporarily until it was rewritten. Hope this helps Glen 14:25, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

Awbeal - I was just wondering how you feel about the quality of information at OurCampaigns.com, as you have cited it several times. Chronicler3 16:18, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Chronicler3: I think I first saw OurCampaigns.com as a result of one of your edits, just the other day. It seems that the information (much of which doesn't seem to be available online anywhere else) is reliable but I haven't done enough looking to know for sure. Incidentally I tried to sign up for an account and nothing happened. Any insight? Awbeal 17:13, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Hmm .. I'm not sure. Feel free to try it again. I also have an account there. I think that OC and Wiki could have a symbiotic relationship - with Wiki offering a briefer overview of election coverage and additional information at OC. Just my thoughts. Chronicler3 03:38, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Kent Annas Vanity Removal from the Lenoir Article

You removed the line pointing out the vanity line on the Lenoir,NC Article. Would it have been more within guidelines to point out the contributer was responsible for the vanity entry? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Preserver32 (talk • contribs) 15:53, 13 February 2007 (UTC).

I don't know. I just thought it was inappropriate and didn't make sense. Something like that ought to go on the talk page, if anywhere. I didn't know whether or not Mr. Annas was notable enough to be on the list. After my edit, someone else seems to have decided that indeed he is not notable enough. [edit] Mary Easely

Hi. I got from another Wikipedian that she may run for governor in 2008. Maybe that's not true.

Politics rule 11:59, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Fine, but you need to have some "official" source, some media report, or even a (reputable) blog to cite. I haven't heard anyone talk about her running for Gov, although I have heard people talk about her running for US Senate. And the spelling of her name is Mary Easley. Awbeal 13:14, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Collettsville

Much of the information I placed into the artical was factual. Sources were included, and you deleted reliable and true information. I have already asked for you to be selective in the amount of inaccurate information you take off. Azruski 21:12, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Are you kidding me? The whole section called Establishment is totally without factual basis. The "source" link (http://www.thebluffsofwilsoncreek.com/history.htm) cited does not exist. The whole section called Local Traditions is without a basis in fact as well. The links cited are either about a completely different town (Valparaiso, Indiana) or do not include the fact that is being cited. The section on Schooling is not appropriate for a Wikipedia article or is not based on fact. The section on Church is not supported by the source cited. The section on Housing is not appropriate for a Wikipedia article. And finally, the section on Trivia is not supported by the source cited (which deals primarily with eastern NC). Again, let me point out that I am from this part of the state, so I know a little bit about it. Awbeal 21:38, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikimania in Atlanta!

Hi! I noticed your involvement on U.S. South-related articles, categories and WikiProjects, and I wanted to let you know about a bid we're formulating to get next year's Wikimania held in Atlanta! If you would like to help, be sure to sign your name to the "In Atlanta" section of the Southeast team portion of the bid if you're in town, or to the "Outside Atlanta" section if you still want to help but don't live in the city or the suburbs. If you would like to contribute more, please write on my talk page, the talk page of the bid, or join us at the #wikimania-atlanta IRC chat on freenode.org. Have a great day!

P.S. While this is a template for maximum efficiency, I would appreciate a note on my talk page so I know you got the message, and what you think. This is time-sensitive, so your urgent cooperation is appreciated. :) Mike H. I did "That's hot" first! 22:47, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Missing legislator articles

Thanks for helping to create articles for missing representatives. In case you weren't aware of it, there's an on-going list of these articles here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/American politicians/Representatives. Several people add red links to the list when they find them, and create new articles to reduce the list. When the links first turn blue, I check to see that the delegation articles and ordinal congress articles link to them, and I mark them as (done). After a few days, I delete them from the list. This allows others to see which ones have been done too. Feel free to create more articles! Thanks again.--Appraiser 14:22, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Queens College

Hi- I see you added a note about Queens University of Charlotte on the Queens College page. Can I ask why you felt this was necessary? I would tend to doubt that people would ever confuse the two. However, I'll wait for a response before I revert anything. Best,Slapshot01j 01:45, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

I might add, Rutgers University was also originally called Queen's College, and nobody has deemed it necessary to put a link to Rutgers on the CUNY Queens page.Slapshot01j 01:48, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
I did it because the entry for Lena Springs had a link to Queens College, but it meant what is currently Queens University of Charlotte because when Springs attended there, its name was indeed Queens College. Perhaps Queens College, City University of New York ought to have a note directing people to the disambiguation pages Queen's College and/or Queen's University (disambiguation). Maybe that would be more complete than just linking to Queens University of Charlotte? Awbeal 12:19, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Jimharrelliii.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Jimharrelliii.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 10:29, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Correction to Henry Frye bio

Hello. I work with former NC Supreme Court Justice Henry Frye[1] at the law firm of Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard, LLP, where Justice Frye serves as Of Counsel.

According to Justice Frye himself, the statement, "He went on to become the first African-American to complete a full Law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. [1]" is not factual.

Other than Justice Frye's own words, additional proof can be found in an article published in the NC Law Review (73 N.C. Law Review 675 (1995), "People: African American and Other Minority Students and Alumni," The University of North Carolina School of Law, A Sesquicentennial History; III. The Evolution of the Modern Law School: Crucial Trends that Bridge Past and Future [2], written by Charles E. Daye. Mr. Daye states, "Harvey Beech, J. Kenneth Lee, and James Robert Walker, Jr., concluded their third year of law school at the University and were each awarded the LL.B. degree in 1952, thus becoming the first three African-Americans to earn law degrees at the University of North Carolina. Beech and Lee earned their degrees at the end of the spring term and the records list their date of degree as June 1952. Walker's degree date is listed as August 1952. Thus, the inference is that he completed his work at the end of the summer session in 1952."

Additional clarifications can be found in the transcript of an interview with Justice Frye by WUNC-TV [3], from the Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill [4], and from the UNC General Alumni Association, News & Publications, From the Hill Online, "Harvey Beech '52 Never Liked Being First." [5]

Justice Frye requests this reference removed from his bio on Wikipedia. Thanks.

Thank you for this information. I will certainly remove that from the entry. I only included it because I read it in several different places and therefore believed it to be accurate. With no information about why the line kept being stricken, I had to assume that the intent was malicious. Now that I know that this is not the case, I apologize. Awbeal 17:51, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
Wonderful, thank you so much. He will be pleased. And, I apologize as well. It took me this long to figure out how to respond (talk). Newhitesell 17:59, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Charles Manly

Greetings fellow Tar Heel. I see where the CM article has a lot of stuff about Alexander Manly. I suggest creating a separate article on the Wilmington editor. He is notable in his own right.Godspeed John Glenn! Will 18:35, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

You're right. I have done so at Alexander Manly. Thanks for the suggestion.Awbeal (talk) 17:51, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

I like the article. I'd like to see somewhere that the Wilmington riot was the first post civil war armed insurrection. i think i saw that in the N&O article. A shameful period! I edited the cite to a reference and created a reference section. It took me a long time to figure out how to do references but they pack a lot of information into an article. See my articles on Teddy Shapou, Anthony Atala & Raymond Garthoff. I still have some older articles I have to convert to references. I went to NCCU law school. I was laughing at the Frye comment about not being the first Carolina law grad. i have a b.s. in physics from carolina. took two classes at carolina law school. one from Nakell, that guy that got arrested twice for shoplifing. he represented Chavez M at one time.Godspeed John Glenn! [edit] John Edwards on housing

I am confused about a change you made to a revision I made to the article on John Edwards and the Political Positions of John Edwards. (Thank you for correcting the misspelling...I usually edit with a word processor) You removed what I believe to be a responsible citation: Edward's campaign web site.

[edit] Michael Munger

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Michael Munger, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Michael Munger. [edit] WPTF

You added a lot of good information to the WPTF article, but as I was trying to insert information for the years after 1941, I couldn't find your source. I tinkered with some of what you said to match what my source said but tried to leave your information intact. If you can find the actual sources for everything you said and put it under "References" the proper way, with a full web address or citation, I would appreciate it.

My information is nowhere near complete but I've been here all afternoon and I got sidetracked from my original objective. Every time I found a history of one station, I kept seeing other stations' histories.

Issue One • May 2008About the Newsletter

News

Hello WikiProject North Carolina members! A few of us at the The Newsroom Team decided to get together and re-energize the project, through these newsletters. This newsletter is hopefully the first of many to come. We want this project to be active in creating and expanding articles related to our state. If you're a current or former resident of the state, we hope that you will help spread the knowledge of how much there is to learn about North Carolina.

  • A great way to expand new articles is by keeping track of the new articles list. Please add any new NC-related articles or older ones you come across that have not been tagged with the project banner. When you notice an article has been added to the list, read over it and check for citations, grammatical errors, and spelling. If you've written a NC-related article in the past 5 days, read the requirements for Did you know... and add your article to the DYK nomination list. It might be chosen for the Main Page!
  • If you see a new member added to the project list, a great idea would be to leave them a welcome message on their talk page. Show them we notice new members and that we want them to become active participants.
  • If you have any questions in regards to the project, feel free to contact someone from The Newsroom Team. Thanks for all of your hard work and happy editing!
