Asgard starships in Stargate

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the television series Stargate SG-1, the starships of the Asgard Fleet are among the most advanced ever encountered by the SGC. The Asgard ships are equipped with powerful hyperdrives, enabling them to traverse thousands of light years in minutes. These ships are capable of operating with as few as one Asgard on board, suggesting that their ships possess highly advanced AI. However, in one instance, Thor has made a reference to evacuating his crew. [1]

The Beliskner class cruiser is the most commonly-used type of Asgard starship. The actual name of the class is unknown - the Beliskner is the only ship of this class whose name is known.

[edit] Technology

Asgard ships are capable of very fast hyperspace travel which allow them to travel across galaxies in a matter of minutes. They utilize sophisticated cloaking devices to mask their presence from all manner of scanning devices, including radar. The ships also use the Asgard molecular teleportation technology to transfer personnel and equipment between the ship and any nearby location such as a planet's surface nearly instantaneously. Each ship has automated medical treatment systems, which includes a medical stasis pod that can be used by the ship's Asgard commander in the event of a dire emergency.

Ships of the Beliskner class are powered by a series of four neutrino ion generators, possess two rear thrusters for propulsion, and utilize a forward-mounted deceleration drive to control planetary reentry. The ships possess a series of energy dampening fields that contain and negate the potential damage caused by internal explosions. Ships of the Beliskner class are equipped with defensive energy shield systems. There is no quick, easy method with which to disable or destroy them. The ships mount a number of high-energy weapon systems though the Asgard typically use a single forward firing cannon. A single Asgard ship is more than a match for several standard Goa'uld Ha'tak motherships, although warships modified with Ancient technology by Anubis have been known to pose a greater threat. Asgard ships and their computer systems are particularly susceptible to Replicator infestation and takeover due to their heavy reliance on computers and automation, and the fact that much of replicator knowledge has come from the Asgard race (meaning they know how to easily infest them)

Asgard Motherships carry advanced AI systems that allows them to be run by a very small number of crew. Also In "Nemesis" it stated the Asgard computer on board have something close to the effect of the Repository of the Ancients. The Computer aboard the Mothership stored all the knowledge the Asgard possess. There is no indication whether or not the Asgard themselves possess the ability to store all of their race's knowledge, however when Thor was captured by Anubis with only a limited amount of time before he was confronted by the Asgard fleet he was able to siphon large amounts of knowledge from Thor's mind.

[edit] History

The Beliskner itself was the ship commanded by Thor, Supreme Commander of the Asgard Fleet, on his early missions to Earth. In the third season episode "Nemesis", the Beliskner was infested by Replicator bugs during a battle in Asgard space; the machines accessed the computer systems, discovering the existence of Earth, and set a course. The critically-injured Thor then disabled the ship's outbound teleporters to prevent them from escaping. Ultimately, Thor brought Colonel Jack O'Neill aboard the ship in order to destroy the vessel before the Replicators could land and infest Earth. Major Samantha Carter and Teal'c joined O'Neill on the Beliskner and were successful in destroying the ship's deceleration drive; the ship made an uncontrolled reentry and subsequently burned up in Earth's atmosphere.

The Beliskner class ship was replaced by the O'Neill class battleship as the main Asgard warship and the Daniel Jackson class starship as the Asgard science ship.

Replicator Disruptor

The Daniel Jackson is a class of starship of Asgard origin, commanded by Thor, Supreme Commander of the Asgard fleet. It is named in honor of SG-1 member Dr. Daniel Jackson, with whom Thor has developed a friendship since they first met in second season episode "Thor's Chariot".

[edit] Technology

This ship is described as a science vessel and thus lacks the firepower of the O'Neill class battleship, however it should not be underestimated as it is capable of destroying entire star systems by imploding stars into black holes. It is equipped with shields that protect it from most weapon fire (even from a Replicator-controlled Ha'tak) though the shields do not protect it from fired Replicator blocks. The Daniel Jackson is also able to materialise computer-generated objects, an ability which Thor uses when he materialises a Replicator disruptor designed by O'Neill while linked with the computer. This process is demonstrated in the finale episode of Stargate SG-1 by making an adjustment to the Odyssey's Asgard transporters matter could be created in any form desired. Thor later installs a larger variant of this disruptor in his ship which has the ability to destroy every Replicator on a ship or a planet. The ship is smaller than the other two known Asgard ships and is roughly the size of a Ha'tak.

[edit] History

The ship was introduced in the Season Seven episode "Fragile Balance", where it (or a ship of similar class) was used by Loki, a renegade Asgard scientist, for his genetic cloning research on Earth - and on Jack O'Neill in particular.

The name of the ship was revealed in the Season Eight premiere episode "New Order", in which Thor used the ship to observe the Replicators being pulled into a black hole, created when the Asgard artificially increased a sun's mass, collapsing it. However, some Replicators survived to form a ship which attacked the Daniel Jackson. Unable to use hyperspace engines due to the immense gravitational forces present, the ship was unable to escape. Several Replicators were able to enter the ship through the firing of multiple Replicator blocks onto the hull, effectively bypassing the ship's shields. Despite this, Teal'c and Samantha Carter were able to repel and eliminate the invaders.

The ship later flew to Earth, from which it transported Jack O'Neill; in stasis due to the Ancient knowledge in his mind, Jack was successfully revived and was able to assist the Asgard in the creation of a weapon for use against the Replicators. This "Disruptor" weapon was later incorporated into the Daniel Jackson, enabling the Asgard to cleanse their world, Orilla, of the Replicator threat.

Following the Replicator attack on the Milky Way galaxy, the Daniel Jackson was infested by replicators attempting to trial methods of allowing for the disruptor technology to affect the replicators. Samantha Carter was successfully evacuated from the ship to Earth by Thor before he directed the ship into Deep Space. Thor himself abandoned ship by transferring his consciousness into a new body. The fate of the Daniel Jackson remains unknown after the ship was abandoned, presumably it was consumed for materials to produce new replicator blocks. (Reckoning Part 1).

The O'Neill class battleship is a class of Asgard starship named after Colonel Jack O'Neill of SG-1, as O'Neill has become legendary among the Asgard as representing the next stage in human evolution, due to his brain's capability to receive the library of the Ancients and of course for his efforts against the Replicators.[2]

[edit] Technology

It is a more advanced ship than the Beliskner-class cruiser and is the first class designed primarily for the fight against the Replicators. The hull is made of an alloy of trinium, carbon and naqahdah.

The O'Neill is armed with pulsed energy cannons (similar to that of Hatak ships, but much more powerful) that can take out a Replicator ship with its shields down. However, the weapons are ineffective against Ori ships.

[edit] History

The first O'Neill-class battleship, the O'Neill, was used as a decoy to protect an Asgard planet from three Replicator-infested ships. The O'Neill then flew on an automated course out of the planet's orbit and entered hyperspace to make the Replicators think the Asgard were trying to hide her from them. The Replicator ships took the bait and changed their course to follow the O'Neill, disengaging the shields and transferring all power to the engines. After the Replicator ships had caught up to the O'Neill, it then self-destructed and the explosion destroyed the three following ships. The plan was all thanks to the "primitive" ideas of then Major Samantha Carter, who thought up the plan on-board Thor's ship.

The O'Neill class is later mass-produced and serves as the main warship of the Asgard, replacing the Beliskner-class cruiser. Three of them are used to scare away Anubis, when he threatens to kill SG-1 as well as the Asgard scientist Heimdall. When the Replicators try to attack the new Asgard homeworld Orilla, the Asgard dispatch six O'Neill-class ships to destroy the arriving Replicator ship. The six ships are able to destroy the Replicator ship when it exits hyperspace but are unable to stop the Replicator blocks from raining down onto the planet.

In the Stargate SG-1 Season 9 finale, an O'Neill class ship is among the ships at the Battle of P3Y-229. While its fate is unknown, its pilot, Kvasir survived the battle, and was on the Odyssey helping with repairs.

Most likely the O'Neill-Class that fought in the battle of P3Y-229 was destroyed because if it had survived it would have helped the Odyssey face down the Lucian alliance Hatak that had captured Teal'c and would have beamed Carter on board.
