Peter Wilton Cushing OBE (Kenley, 26 maggio 1913 – Canterbury, 11 agosto 1994) è stato un attore inglese, noto per le sue molte apparizioni in film prodotti dalla Casa Cinematografica Hammer Films, in cui recitò nella parte del Barone Frankenstein e del Dr. Van Helsing, che, assieme all'investigatore Sherlock Holmes, sono i tre ruoli a cui Cushing si è dedicato maggiormente nella sua carriera.
Tra molti altri ruoli, spesso era l'antagonista del suo caro amico Christopher Lee. Era un volto familiare su entrambe le sponde dell'Atlantico, tanto che recitò anche nel film Star Wars e nelle pellicole della serie Doctor Who.

Il suo esordio nel mondo del cinema avvenne nel 1936, non come attore ma come assistente alla regia. In seguito vestì i panni dell'attore teatrale nei teatri inglesi prima di passare a Hollywood nel 1939.
Poco prima che iniziasse la Seconda Guerra mondiale conobbe e sposò Helen Beck, che rimase la sua compagna sino al 1975, anno della sua morte.
Nel 1957 girò la pellicola La maschera di Frankenstein (The Curse of Frankenstein) in cui interpretava per la prima volta il barone Frankenstein. Iniziò così per Cushing una lunga partecipazione ai film dell'orrore. Peter Cushing e Christopher Lee consolidarono in questa serie di pellicole un sodalizio come riconosciuta coppia, la più affiatata del cinema horror.
Cushing seppe però sapientemente dosare le proprie scelte, così nel 1969 apparve nei panni di Sherlock Holmes in una serie televisiva della BBC e nel 1977 interpretò il gelido Grand Moff Tarkin, personaggio appartenente alle forze dell'Impero Galattico in Guerre Stellari. Nello stesso anno sir Cushing veste i panni di un ex sergente nazista in L'occhio nel Triangolo, film quasi sconosciuto interpretato anche da John Carradine.
Dopo la morte della moglie e a causa della sua malattia apparve sempre più raramente e poco prima di morire, nel 1994 accettò di commentare per la BBC Flesh and Blood, un documentario sulla ex casa cinematografica Hammer Film Productions, fallita nel 1975.
