Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) was established on December 1, 2000. It was formerly known as Kolej Universiti Teknikal Kebangsaan Malaysia (KUTKM) before being upgraded to university status in early 2007.
It was established under Section 20 of the University and University College Act 1971 (Act 30) under the Orders of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (Incorporated) 2001. UTeM is an Institut Pengajian Tinggi Awam (IPTA) or a public university which is mainly funded by the Malaysian government.
It is a pioneer in the use of the "Practice and Application Oriented" teaching and learning method for technical education in Malaysia. This is in accordance with the government’s decision to cater for the human resource need of Malaysia’s industries.

UTeM’s current (temporary) campus is located at Taman Tasik Utama, Ayer Keroh and is in the vicinity of Melaka International Trade centre and the Chief Minister's Department. The university started in 2001 by renting 68 units of shop houses from Metacorp Properties Sdn Bhd to house the administrative offices, lecture rooms, hostels, library and staff accommodation.
In 2002, the university rented 40 more shop houses to accommodate new laboratories for the faculties and to cater for additional administrative and student hostels.
In early 2003, additional spaces in the form of 11 shop houses were rented from Metacorp Properties Sdn Bhd and 119,200 square feet of space was rented from Cubic Electronics Sdn Bhd. Ayer Keroh. The university also rented a 17 storey apartment block (Greenview Meadows) in Bachang to meet the growing needs for student accommodation.
Even though the university operates from a temporary campus, the facilities and amenities that it provides are comparable to that provided by other university universities.

UTeM has five faculties namely Electrical Engineering, Electronic and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Information and Communication Technologies.
There are two academic centres being the Academic Service Centre and the University-Industry Centre (UNIC). An institute, the Institute for Technology Management and Entrepreneurship, was also established to offer post-graduate programmes on technology management and entrepreneurship.
The university offer academic programmes at diploma, bachelor, masters and PhD levels. The university aims to produce professionals who are not only highly qualified and technically competent but are also highly skillful and efficient.
The academic programs offered by the university are conducted in a way where equal emphases is given to theoretical and practical aspects of the discipline. The teaching and learning approaches at the university are practice and application oriented and involve :
