[edit] Playing career
He was drafted by the Sabres 18th overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. Much of his English skills were taught to him by his former teammate Alexei Zhitnik.[citation needed] He had an injury plagued 2005–06 season, but did not miss a game in the 2006–07 season. He scored the NHL's first goal in the 2006–07 season - at 9:09 of the first period in the season opener at Carolina.
He was the defensive partner of Teppo Numminen but since Teppo's most recent heart surgery, he switched between Nolan Pratt and Nathan Paestch.
A lot was said about the quality of play by Kalinin during the 2007 Sabres-Sens series. Not until after players reported to camp for the 07–08 season was it revealed that he was playing with a sports hernia and didn't have surgery until the off season. There was also speculation about a hand or finger injury he may have sustained during the first game of the series while blocking a shot.
It was announced that Kalinin will not be offered a contract by the Buffalo Sabres, Kalinin will become a UFA July 1, 2008
