When the movie begins, a young girl called Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) is seen on a ship with her father, who is the major of a British colony in the Caribbean. Elizabeth catches sight of a boy in the water and the ship's crew save him. He is called Will Turner (Orlando Bloom). Elizabeth finds a chain around his neck with a golden medallion, then takes it and keeps it.
Fifteen years later, Elizabeth has grown up, and her father is now governor of Port Royal. She is about to get married, but she does not really want to. Will is her father's blacksmith. He likes Elizabeth and she likes him, but they cannot show it.
One day a man named Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) appears and saves Elizabeth's life; she had worn a very tight dress and had fallen into the sea, but he saved her and opened the dress so she could breathe. He turns out to be a pirate, and is put in prison after having threatened her. A few days later, pirate Captain Barbossa and the crew of the black sailed ship, the Black Pearl attack the colony and kidnap Elizabeth. Jack is the only one who knows where the pirates are going to, so he and Will steal a ship called the Interceptor, to free Elizabeth, and the adventure begins. The pirates that kidnapped Elizabeth were cursed, and believed that only her blood can release them.
