Psychedelic mushrooms are special kinds of mushrooms. They contain the alkaloid psilocybin and other related tryptamine derivatives. Psilocybin affects 5-HT2 receptors found in the locus coeruleus, and raphe system found at the base of the brain. From the altered state of the locus coeruleus and raphe system, both produce an increase in neuronal firing and an increased consciousness (entheogenic perception, halucinations or visions). Physiologically, they do not harm the human body, and can be used to treat cluster headaches and other medical conditions. Some psychological problems are possible from use, but not likely or common. Death may occur due to overdose
