Minneapolis, Minnesota is the largest city in Minnesota. It is near St. Paul, Minnesota. St. Paul and Minneapolis are often called the 'Twin Cities' because they are so close to each other.

The United States got the land in the year 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase. The United States then build Fort Snelling in 1819. This where the Minnesota and Mississippi River meet and they can show military power. The name "Minneapolis" was give to the city in 1852. The name came from two words put together. One is the Indian word for "laughing waters", "Minnehaha," and one is Greek word for "city", "polis." Minneapolis' name mean "City of Waters." In 1866, Minneapolis was two cities: Minneapolis and St. Anthony. It became one city in 1872. The first mayor was Dorilus Morrison.
