[баив æй] Wikipedias of the Russian federation

Hi Amikeco,

I'm interested in the development of Wikipedias in the regional languages of the Russian Federation.

So far there are successful or somewhat-successful Wikipedias in Ossetic, Tatar, and Chuvash. The Udmurt Wikipedia was just created and looks to be off to a good start. There have been stirrings at the Abkhaz, Avar, Bashkir, and Komi Wikipedias. The Chechen WP seems to be dead.

Seeing as you seem to speak Ossetic and seem to be involved in academic linguistics, I think it's probably safe to assume that you are better connected as far as regional languages of R.F goes than am I.

It would be great if you knew anybody who could help to get the Abkhaz, Avar, Bashkir, and Komi Wikipedias up and running, and get the Chuvash and Udmurt Wikipedias off the ground.

Once they look to be doing good, it would be wonderful if we had native speakers of other regional languages so that we could get Wikipedias in them... Yakut, Tuvan, Mordvin, Mari, Buriat, Adyghe, Dargwa, Ingush, Kabardian, Kalmyk, Karachay, Karelian, Permyak, Kumyk, Lak, Lezgi... Of course, that's a long list. I think Yakut, Mordvin, Mari, Adyghe, Dargwa, Kabardian, Lezgi are the most widely-spoken. But we can cross that bridge when we come to it.

As you might guess, the active people of the Russian language wikipedias do have some kind of coordination. As for the admins of Chuvash and Udmurt wikipedias, they are my good friends. We are doing our best to move on other wikipedias too: much have been done to advertise the Komi and the Avar wikipedias, more work is planned.

As for the largest languages, you touch an interesting point here. Some languages are widely spoken, but they do not have a steady formal use tradition. Others may be not so widely spread, but they have their own literature, their schools and their interested users on the Net. Thank you for your interest in Ossetic Wikipedia! C'est vrai, the Cyrillic letter it should be. Still nobody in the Ossetian part of the Internet uses the Cyrillic code for the letter æ; it's Latin (Danish etc.) variant is:

• in all the standard fonts;
• in the most popular keyboard layout;
• on most web sites.

That's why we continue using the "Latin" æ, though in fact it is the letter Ossetians use in electronic texts. Several years later it will be a good idea to change that practice -- and it'll be a primitive work for a bot then. - Amikeco 21:15, 21 февралы 2006 (UTC)

Thank you so much for your effort. We have already a MS Windows XP/2000 keyboard layout (and I use it all the time for typing both Russian and Ossetic texts). You can see the layout, if you wish to: [1]. If you can create a simillar layout for Unix users, I'll be very grateful. The letter «Æ/æ» is at the key, where the EN-US layout has «"/'» while the Russian letter «Э/э» goes to the upper left corner (~/`) and the letter «Ё/ё» is at Alt+«J/j». - Amikeco 22:08, 29 августа 2006 (UTC)

Well, they use the Latin letter most often for writing Ossetic (try googling ӕмӕ vs æмæ: 45 and 57,000 — more than a thousand time more popular use). And they really have reasons for that: the Cyrillic ӕ appears ugly or appears not on most computers (see the screenshot). My idea is to keep using the Latin letter for some time here: later we can replace it by a bot at any time. "Technical correctness" is not the main goal now, the goal is probably to make the Ossetic wikipedia popular among potential Ossetic editors -- and that can be achieved by making it easier to use (and that means using Latin Æ on). - Amikeco 22:08, 29 августа 2006 (UTC)

Yes of course this is not something that I want you to do overnight ;-)

Still, you could set the font-family of #bodyContent to a font that support all the Ossetian characters, from your screenshot firefox uses the default Windows font (Verdana?) and uses Arial Unicode MS for ӕ. Arial Unicode MS is a bit ugly but contains the "required" characters, maybe it should be in the list of fonts in CSS but down in the priority list. The other sans serif fonts that support Ossetian are DejaVu Sans (common on Linux), Segoe UI (default font with Windows Vista), Lucida Sans (comes with Java and seems to be available on many Windows versions).

Here's what I would add to MediaWiki:Monobook.css

Mimo, iż bardzo interesuję się Kaukazem, w tym także Osetią i Osetyjczykami (miałem okazję spotkać ich kilku podczas mojego pobytu we Władykaukazie), czasem trafią się błędy :) Nobody's perfect! Zamierzam zresztą przetłumaczyć z ru-wiki (niestet nie znam osetyjskiego), jakieś artykuły o Osetyjczykach (np. o Abajewie, jego słownik etymologiczny to jedno z podstawowych ważniejszych dzieł etymologicznych, polszczyzna do dziś nie ma dużego i dobrego słownika etymologicznego!). The Wikimedia Foundation runs a Communications Committee, which co-ordinates requests for interviews from the press. I'm not a vandal, as you can see, my bot work on more than 140 languages and has been flagged on 70 languages at the moment. I am tired to beg everyone about having the bot flag before starting your (yes, useful) work. At smaller wikipedias we use the Recentchanges page as the tool to see what's happenning -- and when it's all a mess because of hundreds of bot changes, then it's no longer usefule.

You are absolutely not right to say that it's unable to find the right place for asking the bot flag here, because there's the direct link to it from meta:Requests for bot status (the page you should probably know better).

Там еще шаблоны оказались непереведеными, есть место по территории, место по населению, независимость от и плотность населения. Ты бы не мог их перевести и вставить в шаблон и для примера в одну страну, скажем, в Азербайджан? Остальное я все сделаю. По шаблону:

Плотность я сделал, чтобы появилась автоматически (с кривым названием параметра; пусть так будет, чем плодить ненужную работу — со временем это ботом автозаменить можно будет).

__Родительный_ _падеж__=_Азербайджана_ везде, где встречаешь такую строчку, просто стирай её. Это наследие русской ВП; вроде тут нигде не требуется.

__Независимость_ от_=_СССР_ тоже можно убирать; я страну вписываю в дату (после даты) — будет в случае Аз-на «Хæдбар сси=1991 азы 30 августы Советон Цæдисæй» (с падежом, конечно, можно не разбираться — просто страну, если она есть, после даты ставить).

Saluton, Amikeco. It's probably not the first time someone tells you this, but I would like to invite you to Betawiki. In Betawiki, you can translate the whole interface messages of Betawiki and its extensions. The advantage of using Betawiki rather than translating locally via Special:Allmessages is that the translations will be incorporated into the software itself and will affect all wiki projects in general, whereas the local translations here can't be inherited by other projects (such as Ossetian Wiktionary, for example). Moreover, if you login into a Wikipedia in another language (say, English) and choose Ossetian as your interface language, the translations would also be present there. Bottomline, it would affect Ossetian localization in all WMF wikis. Currently, we have 8.52%% of MediaWiki messages and 0.00% of extensions used by Wikimedia projects translated to Ossetian. As you see, there is still a lot of work to do.

If you agree it's a good idea and you are willing to contribute, please register at Betawiki and ask for translation privileges which will be granted immediately. You can also pass this message on to other fellow Wikipedians who would be willing to help in the translation of MediaWiki to Ossetian. Help is never enough :). You can also find us on the Freenode IRC network in the channel #mediawiki-i18n where we will be happy to help you get started.

I see you already did some good work there. Thanks. I forgot to tell you it would be better to first start with the Mediawiki Most Used messages. These messages ensure an essential basic interface localization. You could work on those first. And by the way, you don't have to also translate the messages here in Ossetian Wikipedia. The work you do at Betawiki is transported to Wikipedias (and other projects) usually within 1 or 2 weeks.
