植村秀（うえむらしゅう、1928年 6月19日 - 2007年 12月29日）はメイクアップアーティストである。株式会社シュウウエムラ化粧品名誉会長（創業者）。成城学園卒業。日本を代表するメイクアップアーティストとして知られる。

2007年12月29日15時50分、急性肺炎のため死去。79歳。2008年1月31日青山葬儀場のお別れ会では、お焼香ではなく赤いガラスに灯された蝋燭と赤いバラが献花された。多数の参列者が故人を偲び、クレンジングオイルが手渡された。

1950年代にハリウッドへ渡り、日本人唯一の男性メイクアップアーティストとして活動した。

1964年 - 日本初となるハリウッド式のメイクアップ・アトリエを開設
1967年 - ジャパンメイクアップを設立
1982年 - シュウウエムラ化粧品に社名変更
1983年 - 表参道に「シュウウエムラビューティブティック」1号店を開店

現在、海外17カ国に進出している。

植村秀はメイクアップアーティストでもあり、コスメトロジストでもある。彼の提案してきたものは現代の化粧品ビジネスに大きく影響を与えた物ばかりである。

History

1928 Born in Tokyo, Japan

1955 Works as a make-up artist in Hollywood films.

1965 Establishes Shu Uemura Make-up institute in Tokyo, the first Hollywood-style make-up atelier in Japan.

1967 Founds Japan Make-up Inc. Imports skincare and make-up products including Unmask Cleansing Oil from the U.S. to sell in Japan. 1968 Launches Mode Make-up.

1971 Establishes JM Laboratories Inc., a cosmetics plant in Setagaya, Tokyo and initiates the in-house production of skincare products.

1972 Holds make-up performance “Beauty Show” across Japan. First in Japan to bring make-up process to a performance. Organizes the first Make-up Competition in Japan, contributing to the improvement of the technical skill of Japanese make-up artists

1975 Sets up Japan Make-up Association, a syndicate of Japanese make-up artists inspired by American S.M.A. (Society of Make-up Artists)

1976 Changes the company name to JM Shu Cosmetics Inc. and becomes a consolidated cosmetics company.

1982 Changes the company name to Shu Uemura Cosmetics Inc.

1983 Opens his first Shu Uemura Beauty Boutique in Omotesando (Aoyama, Tokyo). First in the industry to offer a wide range of make-up color products in simple transparent packages, in an “open tester” style environment.

1985 Opens his first international Beauty Boutique in Hong Kong.

1986 Opens a Shu Uemura Beauty Boutique in St. Germain, Paris. Chosen as “The Most Beautiful Boutique in the sixth ward of Paris.” Involves in the business cooperation with Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Co., Ltd., a bio-chemical company and releases new cosmetic products, using the latest biotechnology

1987 Supports many artistic performances, including the Paris Opera's Groupe de Recherches Choregraphiques and Léo Ferré.

1988 Holds a make-up performance “The Journey of Life” at Escape Cardin in Paris, capturing French people’s attention.

1989 Releases the first perfume worldwide and receives French “Verre Avenir”award, given to the most beautiful perfume bottle.

1990 Releases the first foaming make-up base “UV Underbase.”

1995 Holds “Shu Uemura Beauty Art Session'95”, bringing showmanship to beauty and fashion entertainment consisting of make-up competition, including Shu Uemura’s make-up performance and a fashion talk show. Releases a new beauty essence, “Principe 21”focusing on skin cell renewal.

1997 Shu Uemura’s skincare packaging receives the gold award for the “Annual Japanese Package Design.” It also receives awards in Europe and the U.S. Opens the fourteenth Beauty Boutique in Soho, as the New York flagship.

1998 Releases “Depsea Water”, the world’s first cosmetic product containing deep sea water. Receives Nikkei industrial newspaper award for “Nikkei Excellent Product / Service Award ’98”.

1999 Completes Muroto Factory Museum in Muroto-city, Kochi, a factory to manufacture products using deep sea water. Opens “Shu Uemura Atelier Factory 1999” in Odaiba, Tokyo, a space combining a boutique and a factory to offer customized cosmetic products.

2000 Forms alliance with L’Oréal.

2001 Releases skincare series “β-G Skin Resistance Program” focusing on β-glucan.

2003 Releases “Depsea Therapy Moisture Recovery”, the first comprehensive hydrating skincare line based on the brand’s emblematic “Depsea Water” enriched with phyto-ingredients. Releases “Cleansing Beauty Oil Premium A/O” containing catechin extracted from Japanese green tea known for its anti-oxidant properties.

2004 Releases “Water Perfect Smoothing Water-in Fluid Foundation” a foundation rich in moisture with skincare benefits.

2005 Releases “High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil Fresh” inspired by Japanese cherry blossoms. Renovates dramatically the emblematic “Pressed Eye Shadow” after 22 years. A thorough selection of colors and textures stimulating one’s creativity and enhancing free make-up creation creates a sensation again in the industry. Expands the brand to 14 countries and 247 installations worldwide.
