[modifica] Question regarding the attribute "da" and "Da"

Dear Italian Lorenzo Da Ponte specialists, an recent Austrian biography on Lorenzo Da Ponte argues that the attribute "da" is used with aristocratic persons whereas "Da" with non-aristocratic persons. The bishop is spelled "Lorenzo da Ponte" and the artist "Lorenzo Da Ponte". Is that true? But I found out that Leonardo da Vinci simply means that he is from Vinci. Thus, da Ponte can either be aristocratic or just living in Ponte. This is rather confusing. Please, enlighten the german Wikipedia community on this issue. Thanks a lot.
