Dans les années 1950, Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) est chargé par Herbert Greenleaf, un riche armateur américain de ramener en Amérique, son playboy de fils, Dickie (Jude Law), qui a fui la pression familiale en Italie où il passe des vacances « prolongées » avec sa fiancée Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow), financées par son père. Tom découvre un monde idyllique, entre farniente et boîtes de jazz... Mais quand Dickie finit par se lasser de Tom et lui refuse son amitié, Tom est prêt à tout pour s'approprier cette vie de rêve...

Quarante ans après le film de René Clément, avec Alain Delon ; Anthony Minghella adapte le roman de Patricia Highsmith, Mr Ripley, plus connu en France sous le nom de Plein soleil. Au final, on retrouve un thriller machiavélique avec le trio Matt Damon, Jude Law et Gwyneth Paltrow, ainsi qu'une bande originale exceptionnelle emmenée par les plus grands noms du jazz.
