[edit] About the Municipality
[edit] The name Vik
The name (Norse Vík) is identical with the word vík which means 'inlet'.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from 1991, and shows three knives for the cutting of leaf, which was used as fodder for animals.
[edit] History
Vik was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The annex of Kvamsøy was transferred from Vik to Balestrand January 1, 1964 - and the annex of Vangsnes was transferred from Balestrand to Vik the same date. The areas of Feios and Fresvik were transferred from Leikanger to Vik January 1, 1992.
The Hopperstad stave church was built in Vik around 1140.
[edit] Birdlife
Situated on the Sognfjord the municipality of Vik is known for its mild climate and great scenery. Take a hike on Vikefjell and you could see such species as Eurasian Golden Plover or in good rodent years, maybe a Rough-legged Buzzard. The woodlands hold the usual passerines depending if it is coniferous or deciduous. Along the fjords Red-breasted Merganser can be seen all year round while the call of the Eurasian Oystercatcher can only be heard from spring through early autumn.
