Sogn og Fjordane is known for its many fjords, mountains and glaciers. The name is very old, and it originally belonged to the fjord (now Sognefjorden). The name is derived from the verb súga 'suck', referring to strong tidal streams at the mouth of the fjord. The Sogn fjord is the longest fjord in the world. The Sogn og Fjordane is approximately 18,634 square kilometers.
- Sogn is also the name of an area in the northern part of Oslo, often associated with Sogn Studentby, a residential area for students.
