[edit] History

[edit] Redevelopment

In December 1994, the Metropolitan Region Scheme was amended to include the original route for the Mandurah Railway, via Kenwick.[citation needed] In July 1995, the Court Liberal government announced the new line to Mandurah (via Kenwick) and committed to complete the line from Kenwick to Jandakot by 2005.[citation needed] In April 1997, the same government approved funding for the South West Metropolitan Railway Master Plan. The Master Plan was completed in April 2000.[citation needed]

In August 2002 the recently elected Gallop Labor government decided to change the railway alignment, and announced the rail line for the southern suburbs railway would instead run along the Kwinana Freeway instead of Armadale Suburban line as previously planned.[citation needed] The Thornlie spur line would however be retained, and may provide a future link option between the two rail alignments.[citation needed]

As part of improvements to the Armadale line, the rail alignment was upgraded including the introduction of grade separated rail crossings.[citation needed] The Lathlain Station was also demolished, in preparation for the construction of a new Victoria Park station some 250m south within the railway reserve.[1] However, despite being advertised widely amongst the community, work on the new station never commenced.[1]

On 17 July 2007, Transport Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced in a media release that the station will finally be built.[2] Valued at $9.2m AUD (2007), the new station is to be constructed 230m south of the existing station site within the railway reserve and is expected to be completed by mid-2008.[2][3]

The new station will be built in a similar configuration to the existing station, but will include covered walkways and additional accessibility features such as Lifts which will assist patrons utilising the nearby offices of the Association for the Blind.[2][3]
