The Icelandic car number plates have two letters and three digits, with an area for inspection stickers to be affixed. In 2007 the two-letter and three-digit plates ran out of possibilities, so 3 letters and 2 digits are now used in this format: AB[]C12.
The last digit shows in which month the car has to undergo vehicle inspection; for example, the car with registration plate TK 701 would have to be inspected in January. In comparison to other European countries, on inspection sticker only year of the next impection (2008 and 08 for year 2008 and so on) is marked. There's two months time allowance for inspection, meaning that if the next inspection date is in January, the car would have to be inspected before the end of March.
There are several different versions of the number plate.
- White plates with blue letters and digits are used for personal and passenger vehicles
- Green plates with white letters and digits are used for foreign diplomats or ambassadors
- Yellow plates with black letters and digits are used for buses, construction vehicles and large commercial vehicles that qualify for cheaper diesel fuels
- Red plates with black letters and digits are used for new unregistered vehicles that are either being driven to the dealership or an inspection office
In addition to these plates, vintage cars are allowed to bear the older Icelandic number plates which consists of one letter and up to five digits.
