SummerSlam (2003) was the sixteenth annual SummerSlam professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It took place on August 24, 2003 at the America West Arena in Phoenix, Arizona. The official theme song was "St. Anger" by Metallica.
The main event from the RAW brand was an Elimination Chamber match for the World Heavyweight Championship between Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, Kevin Nash, Randy Orton and Goldberg, which Triple H won after hitting Goldberg with a sledgehammer when Goldberg was setting Triple H up for a Spear. The SmackDown! brand's main event featured Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship while the main match on the undercard was Shane McMahon vs. Eric Bischoff in a No Disqualification Falls Count Anywhere match.

[edit] Report
[edit] Background
The main feud heading into SummerSlam was on the SmackDown! brand between Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar battling for the WWE Championship. The whole thing started when Angle won the WWE Championship at Vengeance 2003 in a Triple Threat Match also involving Lesnar and The Big Show after Lesnar received an Angle Slam from Angle. Four days later on SmackDown! Lesnar demanded a WWE Championship rematch and Angle accepted. Mr. McMahon, however, denied Lesnar his championship rematch, giving him the opportunity to earn it instead. The following week, Lesnar and McMahon competed in a Steel cage match with Angle as the Special Guest Referee.
[edit] Aftermath
Many of the feuds on the Raw Brand went into Unforgiven, but Kane and Shane's feud went into a Ambulance match at Survivor Series 2003; as did Angle and Lesnar's.

[edit] Notes
- This was the first time in SummerSlam history that the United States Championship was defended.
- Triple H had a groin injury going into the match, so he wore long wrestling tights to cover his leg brace.
- After SummerSlam 2003 was officially over, the entire WWE roster (with the exception of a few) celebrated Vince McMahon's 58th birthday in the middle of the ring. Steve Austin was leading them, and he tried to get The Undertaker to do the Spinerooni, but was unsuccessful. Pat Patterson sung "My Way" to McMahon and it ended with Vince kissing Linda McMahon.
