SummerSlam (1998) was the eleventh annual SummerSlam professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). It took place on August 30, 1998 at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. The official theme song was Highway to Hell by AC/DC. The tagline was "Highway to Hell."

This match was billed as the Highway to Hell. Steve Austin had previously lost and then won back the WWF Championship from Kane, and now he was challenged by Kane’s brother, The Undertaker. In fact, Austin and Undertaker had been forced to become teammates in the months leading up to SummerSlam, and they proved to be a successful tandem as they even capture the WWF Tag Team Championship at one point. The evil Kane had been trying to lure Undertaker to his side, but heading into the match, Undertaker was still only loyal to himself.

Kane came out at the beginning of this epic clash, but Undertaker told his brother to go to the back because he didn’t want any help. The action spilled into the crowd early on and by the time they get back to the ring, Undertaker was in full control. After throwing Austin into the steel steps, Undertaker set Austin up on the Spanish Announce table and delivered a top-rope leg drop through the table. Undertaker looked to have things in control, but he missed a charge into the corner as both Superstars were knocked out. Undertaker went for Old School soon after, but Austin delivered a low-blow, and was able to hit the Stone Cold Stunner for the win.

  • Taylor pinned Animal.
• Sunday Night HEAT match: Gangrel defeated Dustin Runnels (2:30)
  • Gangrel pinned Runnels.
• Sunday Night HEAT match: The Disciples of Apocalypse (8-Ball and Skull) defeated Bradshaw and Vader (2:54)
  • Skull pinned Vader.
• D'Lo Brown defeated Val Venis to retain the WWF European Championship (15:24)
  • Brown won when Venis was disqualified for shoving the referee.
  • Brown was introduced by ring announcer Tony Chimel as being from Helsinki, Finland as part of his "European Champion" gimmick.
• The Oddities (Kurrgan, Golga and Giant Silva) (w/Luna Vachon and the Insane Clown Posse) defeated Kaientai (TAKA Michinoku, Dick Togo, Mens Teioh and Sho Funaki) (w/Yamaguchi-san) in a Handicap match (10:10)
  • Golga pinned all four members of Kaientai after a Big splash.
• X-Pac (w/Howard Finkel) defeated Jeff Jarrett (w/Southern Justice (Mark Canterbury and Dennis Knight)) in a Hair vs. Hair match (11:11)
  • X-Pac pinned Jarrett after hitting him with Jarrett's guitar.
  • Before the match started, Commissioner Slaughter sent Southern Justice back to the locker room so they couldn't cheat.
  • When Jarrett lost the match, The New Age Outlaws (Billy Gunn and Road Dogg), The Headbangers (Mosh and Thrasher) and Droz came down to the ring to assist X-Pac in cutting Jarrett's hair off.
• Edge and Sable defeated Marc Mero and Jacqueline in a Mixed tag team match (8:26)
  • Sable pinned Mero after a Wheelbarrow Splash.
  • Sable pinned Mero in their match, despite it only being a mixed tag team match, not an inter-gender match.
• Ken Shamrock defeated Owen Hart (w/Dan Severn) in a Lion's Den match (9:16)
  • Shamrock made Owen submit with the Ankle Lock.
  • This match took place in The Theater at Madison Square Garden, and drew 2,522 fans.
• The New Age Outlaws (Billy Gunn and Road Dogg) defeated Mankind in a Handicap match to win the WWF Tag Team Championship (5:16)
  • Gunn pinned Mankind after a spike piledriver.
  • Kane no-showed to defend his Tag Team Championship, but after the match, Gunn and Road Dogg put Mankind in the dumpster they brought out to the ring. Kane was in the dumpster and hit Mankind with a sledgehammer and then wheeled it away.
• Triple H (w/Chyna) defeated The Rock (w/Mark Henry) in a Ladder match to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship (26:01)
  • Triple H won by grabbing the belt after Chyna gave a low blow to The Rock.
  • The DX Band performed "Break It Down" live during Triple H's entrance.
• Steve Austin defeated The Undertaker to retain the WWF Championship (20:52)
  • Austin pinned Undertaker after a low-blow and a Stone Cold Stunner.

• During The Undertaker's entrance, fireworks were scheduled to go off in the ring. Referee Earl Hebner was in the ring at the time, and someone could be heard yelling "Get out Earl!" Hebner barely escaped the ring before the fireworks went off.
• During the main event, Undertaker attempted to perform a back body drop on Austin, but Austin countered with a kick. When Undertaker went to rise up in retaliation (as he always does), he accidentally butted heads with Austin, causing Austin to "black out" for a few seconds, and both were affected by it for the rest of the match.
